My '96 came with Cooper Cobra GTs and I hated them immensely. They are
branded as a performance tire but the rubber compound is hard as a rock and
will last forever. They were not really bad on dry pavement and they had a
really stiff sidewall (which was the only thing I liked about them) but get
a wee bit of rain or even dew overnight and you'll be slipping and sliding
in almost every turn you make. The Cobra's tread pattern looks really cool
but they are noisy - you will think your diff has no fluid in it unless you
fill your trunk with blankets and pillows (don't ask me how I know this).

The "Last Straw" for me was when I had to make a panic stop in downtown
traffic (about 35 mph) and all I got was a lot of smoke and no reduction of
speed. Three days later, I had a set of Toyo T1-Ss and aside from the wimpy
sidewalls, was extremely happy with them.

I am running Yokahamas now and although the sidewalls are better than the
Toyos and they hold way better than the Cobras, the Toyo's grip is just
unbelievable, wet or dry. My next set will be Toyos again. Since you're
running the 14 inch wheels, why not just go for the Toyos? The price
difference isn't that much and you won't get yourself run over by a bus
because you couldn't stop in time. Buy the Coopers and you won't have to buy
tires for several years, but you'll have to drive like a 90 year old
grandmother.

Just my 2 cents - YMMV

Subject: [Miata] Cooper TireR Cobra G/T Tire

Does anybody have any experience with the Cooper TireR Cobra G/T Tire? My
local Farm & Fleet has them on sale in the 185/60 size for 14 inch wheels.
Tire is listed as a performance tire. How does it perform in both wet & dry
conditions & how does it wear?
