Haven't written in awhile (at least not since (hopefully) only blowing
the head gasket on my 90). Life has kept me away and busy. I haven't
even had time to pull the head off the 90 until now to inspect the
damage form this spring. Car has basically been sitting all summer. And
what a bummer: this has been one of the best top down summers I can
remember here in West Tennessee!
Today I got the valve cover off and unbolted the header. The header is
stuck to the head unfortunately. I am afraid to pry against it too much,
being that it is aluminum. Any tips or tricks out there?
One more question... I haven't done this yet on a Miata. Can the head
actually be lifted off with the intake relatively all in place? It looks
as though you might be able to disconnect the intake at the throttle
body and lift it with the head? I am sure a lot of you have already
removed the head before, so any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

MessageAfter making sure all the bolts are off on the header you should try the wiggle method rather than the pry bar method. Grab the bottom of the header and pull upward a little.
As for the intake, there is the brace on the bottom that would have to come off before you can remove the head and intake as an assembly.

There's a water pipe bracket on one of the lower studs that provides a bit
of resistance. Wiggle wiggle wiggle.

Probably a good idea to remove various wiring harnesses and water lines,
too :) The brace can be removed by undoing the two bolts that are visible
from above near the #2 runner.

You mean to tell me there are water lines hooked up to this little
engine!?! I thought based on the size, it was air cooled... Too much
time playing with Mom's cool V-dubs! No wonder the thing overheated!!!
