Sorry for taking up so much bandwidth lately - guess I'm just one of
those people that likes some kind of support when making decisions,
especially from experts like you all.
Anyway, here's what the dealer came back to me with:
- He'll give me the '96 base Miata for $6,900
Features that this Miata has:
5-spd, 37,000 miles, Hard top, mud flaps, AM/FM w/ cassette
Features this Miata -doesn't- have:
Soft-top boot, A/C, Power windows, Cruise control, CD player
- He'll give me $4,500 for my '92 Miata B-package IF I keep it like it
is, i.e. leave on 4 new slotted rotors, leave on $250 tail lights, fog
lights, starter button, indiglo gauges, and stainless steel sill
plates. My car also has cruise control, power windows, boot, luggage
rack, Alpine stereo.
The difference between what he'll give me, $4,500, and what I owe,
$6,300, is $1,800 - that gets added to the $6,900 and the effective
total of this '96 base package is $8,700. My other option is to just
keep my '92, wait till I go to the Gap, purchase a manual '93 or '94
outright for $3k - $4k, bring it back here, either swap transmissions
or swap my 'add-ons' and sell it...
I guess my question is: Is it really worth giving up 8 months of work
on my auto '92 for a totally base '96? Again, sorry for the bandwidth,
but thanks for your opinions!

The important thing is getting out of your negative equity situation.
If you do get that '96 for $8700 and you total it, insurance likely
will only give you like $6,900 or whatever they typically go for.
You will still owe that $1800...not the best situation. I'd hang on
to your car till you can afford to pay down your balance low enough
that you can get out of the car and not worry about negative equity.
Had a friend who was in this same situation. Tried to get out of it
by getting another car thinking he'd have it long enought to pay
down...2 cars later he was still in the red.

Don't worry about the bandwidth ... we've got lots of it around here.
When I said that the new car deal sounded really good, somehow I'd missed the
part about its being a base model. I was mentally comparing the price with
what I'd spent on Serrano, and it seemed to compare well. But Serrano was in
showroom condition, and has the leather package, which means CD player, power
everything, and so on. No hard top, though.
It still sounds like a good deal, but not a to-die-for deal. And it sounds
like you might want to pay down the current loan a little more ... you don't
have a lot of equity at this point, obviously.
If it were me, I'd probably walk away from the deal -- at this time. You can
put up with an auto trans for a while, and you might even decide to get
another Miata some day and keep 'em both! Sometimes when I'm stuck in
traffic that's going about 2.3 mph, I wish Serrano were an automatic!

Jason,
Only you can really decide that, but if it was me I think I'd wait. I know
the "bird in the hand" must seem really tempting, but I think you'll thank
yourself in the long run if you don't rush into this one.

Now is when you learn how "dealing" happens. It sounds like what you're
looking at buying is an A package Miata.
Every Miata came from the factory with a soft top boot. A new OEM boot is
~$250, take that price off the Miata you want to purchase, makes it worth
$6750.
What condition is the interior/exterior in? Any scratch repair is worth $50,
if there is a ding with the scratch make it worth $150. Count them up and
take that off the price of the new Miata as well. Open the hood and feel
under the CAS (the round thing at the back of the valve cover on the drivers
side, right next to the coils where the plug wires connect), if there's oil
tell him it's leaking oil and that's another $250. Look at the tires, if
they're OEM tell him that they need to be replaced at $100 per tire.
Interior bits are a bit tougher but can be dealt with accordingly. Each
floor mat that needs replacing is $50 a piece, look for tears where the heel
of the drivers foot goes and I can almost guarantee it will be torn. Check
for the jack and associated bits, including any kind of locking or keyed lug
nut remover. If it's missing you want $50 to replace it, for missing keys or
special lug adapters, another $50.
Getting the idea yet? Anything you remove from *your* car will reduce it's
trade in value and he's already fixed a price on it. Stick with that price
and focus on driving down the price of the new Miata. If you can get it
comfortably close to removing that $1800 equity then I say go for it. But
you have to speak with conviction about any faults you find with the new
car.
Good luck!
Brad

But
you have to speak with conviction about any faults you find with the new
car.
Good luck!
Brad

FWIW, I'd do it. The auto trans will always limit what you can accomplish,
plus the torque of the 1.8 is nice. sorta boils down to how important power
windows are to you in a four foot wide car...

Don't think the base model has a Torsen. Are there others out there
that could be bought reasonably with the Torsen (not a cheap upgrade) if
you shopped a little longer?
It is so easy to get excited and leap into a deal only to find later
that with a little shopping you could have done better.
Rough rule of thumb - ANY car can be bought for less direct from the
owner than thru the dealer.

What sort of taillights are you sporting for $250?
I couldn't find any pics of the rear end of your car on your webpage.

Well, after a lot of thought and reading everyone's opinions, I've decided
against the '96.
While going over the whole deal with the bank, I found that if we refinance
our current consolidated loan as 2 separate loans, I can get a 6.85% rate
(down from 8.2%) and have a 48 month loan on our Miata and 60 month on the
Jeep, rather than 72 for both, for only $40/month more than we're paying
now. My wife and I decided that probably makes better sense than dealing
with negative equity and gaining more debt for a car that really didn't meet
our expectations. Get this, my wife says that after we pay off the '92, she
wouldn't mind finding and KEEPING another newer Miata. WOW! She's finally
given up her Honda del Sol dream car for a Miata dream car. Until then,
though, she's fine with finding another red Miata on the way back up from
the Gap, and as long as it's under $5,000, we can sell it at a profit here
after we swap our 'stuff'.
Anyway, the temptation was hard to resist... But I think I like my ol' '92
more than I thought I did. :)
Thanks everyone for your responses,
