Has anyone built this? I would like to build it but there is a stage left
out, there is no way for the plate to come back up once it gets blown over.

The plate hangs down from the top and is pushed back and up by the
airflow. When the airflow diminishes enough, gravity reasserts itself to
bring the plate back down to the vertical. Plans are here:

I made a workable swinging mount with two 4" gate hinges I got at the
local hardware
store. Back then I had maybe $3.00 invested. The plate disappeared
into the roof of
the Miata's mouth at about 25 mph. Every now and then I'd put a
couple of drops of
lite oil on the hinges. Got stopped about eight times for no front
tag. I'd tell them it was
there last evening when I washed the car. Got apologized to seven
times, only one trooper
figured it out, he tapped the tag with his toe, smiled, and told me
to have a nice day.

My experience has been much the same. I made the mount with 2 strap hinges, oil the hinges once in a while, and have never had an LEO question it in 4-5 years of use.

I built one like the article. The weight of the 2" x 8" galv. metal piece
pulls the plate upright at pretty much anything below 25 - 30 mph. Above
that speed, it lays back flat into the mouth. It's been working well for 20
months, or so. I did not use the plastic the plans call for, instead used
two layers of acrylic. I also recall using 3 mounting holes through the
floor of the mouth. Drilled two of them.

The weight of the 2" x 8" galv. plate is heavier than the plate. Since the
pivot point is between the plate and the top 2/3 of the plate, the galv.
plate pulls the plate back up.

Ah, I see. But what about galvanic reaction between the two different
metals? How did you isolate them?

I used thin synthetic washers. Probably just came out of my collection of
"inventory" in the bins in my garage. Need one of those signs that says
"It's not junk. It's inventory." 8^)
