Not sure what you mean by a scissor type compressor.
I've done at least 10 sets of shocks with the spring compressor I bought
from AutoZone. I don't imagine they are renting something different.
The unit has a metal claw like top and bottom that are attached with a long
screw. You put one on each side of the spring and crank them down a little
at a time making sure you turn both the same amount.

Yep, I used the same ones as Larry. Borrowed them from Tom Kubo (autocross
Miata guy). Two long screws with a u shape bracket at each end. They kind of
twist while using them, but they get the job done.

I actually own a set of those.
When I got them, I was actually just looking for a set to rent, but the parts guy said they were looking to get rid of them and they could be mine for $10. My biggest complaint about this type is that the screws are so long they foul the upper control arms when I use them on the front springs. So I decided to try shortening the screws on these. If it worked, beautiful. If not, I was only out ten bucks.
It worked. I'd still rather have the scissor-type compressors, but these will do until I can cough up for new ones.

Both Snap-On and OTC make very nice scissor-type spring compressors. Our
club purchased a used one off of ebay for our member's use. We've done
about 3 or four sets of shocks at club tech events since purchasing it.
Money well spend. The scissor-type compressor was selected because it is
much safer to use by someone with little experience.

Depends on whether you're reinstalling the stock springs or not. If you're
installing shorter springs, go to tech tips archives on our website. I don't
use a compressor.
