Thanks to everyone who contributed to my previous post on rollbars, I now have a HDHCHTDD in my track rat. I also got (and recommend) the molded padding with the vinyl cover.
BUT...I do not meet the 2" rule. Not even close. At least not with a stock seat. Without a helmet I am a half inch below the rollbar-windshield line.
I did I sit on the floor and see that there is a chance a racing seat would get me there, or at least closer.
Soooo....since I am 5'8, 145 lbs, I think there has to be a seat that would work for me. I also want it to have sliders. Do any of you track junkies have recommendations (or warnings)?
Thanks!
Luis

***There are many, but I use the Kirkey Intermediate with 20-degree layback. With a little fabrication, it will mount onto the OEM rails.

The aluminum seats require a seat back brace, don't they? You might try
just removing a bunch of foam from your stock seat first - if you don't
mind cutting it up a bit.

***For racing, yes -- and you will not be able to use the sliders anymore
unless you take the brace off every time. With a soft top that's not a
problem. With a hard top that is permanently bolted down, it's a hassle
(you have to unbolt the top). I've never heard of a standard HPDE type of
track event require seat back braces, though.

I can almost guarantee that NASA would require it in their HPDE
events... I guess you race spec miata with the SCCA as opposed to NASA,
eh?

***Actually, I race / run with both. I have a seat back brace -- you MUST
have a brace for either sanctioning body in order to pass the tech for
racing (but I dunno about HPDE). But I've never been teched for an HPDE day
'cause I'm always instructing / have a log book, and as such, am responsible
for my own tech on my car. There was a time before I started racing when
yes, I ran with a Kirkey seat without a brace. Nobody ever said anything
about it -- not even Larry Marsala. Are you sure it's required? And if so,
why wouldn't it also be required for an OEM seat then, too? Those seats,
though for different construction reasons, are no better than a Kirkey,
imho.
Curious,

Because of this, taken from
nasaproracing.com/hpde/index.html
Important Note: For in depth rules for HPDE participation please
download the Club Codes and Regulations (CCR) to get specifications on
racing harnesses, seats, roll bar, and other safety related items. As a
general rule, an "unmodified" factory vehicle will pass tech without
any problems, but cars that have been modified (seats, roll bars,
belts, etc) must conform to the preparation rules listed in the
rulebook.
So who do you like racing with better? NASA or SCCA? My car no longer
conforms to NASA rules, so I'm irritated at them at the moment. :)

***It's a tie . . . NASA = usually less competition, leaving room for
working on improving lap times and getting more 'ballsy'; SCCA = full field,
Miatas only, leaving room to get used to traffic without mixing it up with
USTCC, etc., which is a very good thing to me as a relatively new racer. I
love both groups, to be honest. I do, however, only slightly though, prefer
SCCA when hanging out in HPDE groups and testing. But honestly -- it's
like, a hair width difference for me. I can run with anybody as long as
they know how to drive. :)

I'm running with NASA at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, MI this weekend. It's my first time with them...I've heard good & bad about the group as a whole...I just ran an SCCA event there 3 weeks ago so it'll be fun to see how the 2 stack up. Only thing I know I must do is drain my coolant & replace with distilled water & Water Wetter.

***I can send you a list of the tech items from my NASA log book if you need me to. I got dinged for having my seat back brace in a position that did not satisfy the tech official, but it was able to be fixed (turned it upside down and drilled new holes in seat). He also was the first to tell me that I could not use zip ties to hold down my net along the door bar (now I am using hose clamps, which passes). Hmmm . . . oh yeah, and NASA wants the net mounted such that you release it from the top, forward of the driver seat. Everything else is pretty much the same -- or at least, stuff that you can get away with 'til next race. NASA seemed more anal on some things, yet missed a bunch of other things (didn't check, for example, fuel port sample valve -- they never even popped my hood).
I hope that helps . . .

I modded my stock seats by completely removing the bottom foam and making a 1" cushion for the track. I then reinstall the "stock" cushion to drive it on the street.
Works fine and it was cheap.
BTW, I'm almost 6 foot and too wide for most track seats in a Miata.

Subject: [Miata] Roll bars, racing seats and the 2" rule
Thanks!
Luis
