Question for radar detector owners--
Have you found a good solution for protecting your radar detector from
theft? I picture something like a docking station for a laptop--you
slide the detector in, and it plugs into the power source too. That
would let you unplug and remove readily, and reconnect quickly.
Any tips or techniques?
I do realize that installing an alarm system would be the best solution,
but I'm looking for something a little more cost-effective (ok, I'm
cheap!).

I use the Frank Potter method: my V1 is on the back shelf under the
window pocket. I have the remote display in the lower left of the
instrument area and the remote power/volume module down on the
transmission hump by my right leg.
Of course if you have a lidar detector it won't work in this position

I got the Valentine One detector . . . you can either hard wire it or use
the cigarette lighter with the adapter that comes with the unit. I leave
the adapter plugged in but remove the detecter from its "docking station" as
you put it, every time I leave my car. I put it in my purse -- those big ol
things do have a purpose afterall (it's also where the detachable face radio
goes). Unless you have a hard top, the best advice I could ever give you is
to leave NOTHING of real value in that car. I leave the doors unlocked to
prevent some idiot from ripping open the rag top. I'd far rather they
rummage through the place and find nothing. I don't even leave stuff of
value in the glove box or console -- the locks are not sufficient to prevent
theft, and it would be a pain to have to replace the parts if they were
forced into.
So -- just take the detecter with you. Pretty basic theft prevention
technique.

So you're saying I should carry a purse? :-) hee hee.
By the way, since my rear window needs replacing (actually, my entire
top does), I lock the doors. I don't leave anything of value in the
car, but I'm still hoping someone will rip up the top. Then I can
replace it for the cost of my $100 deductible!

Two words for you...
MAN BAG!
No seriously... How does a guy carry all his "stuff" anyway?
My wife has downsized her purse, so she no longer has room for my wallet,
checkbook, PDA, cell phone, keys and handgun... LOL
There are lots of "bags" out there that suit men just fine. They look like
map pouches or small briefcases or even a laptop bag... And you can have
'em in leather or cordura to coordinate with different attire, because you
HAVE TO match... Accessorizing is everything, right?

I have a fairly large shoulder bag in black leather. It will carry a
lot of stuff, but I keep leaving it places!!!! Damn.
Accessorizing is everything, Eric, you're right. It's what separates us

At dinner yesterday, I tried to cut myself a slice of prime rib,
but it was only divisible by itself and one.

+++ You may be in for a nasty surprise, Vinnie, if your state is
anything like the one I live in. Good ol' Virginny allows the insurance
slugs to depreciate a convertible top separately from the normal
deductible and when Mrs.Redd's LeSabre's top got damaged and needed
replacing, Allstate gave her a big $120 towards a $900 top installation.

Back to the issue, I have some old Passport radar detectors from the mid
80's. A popular acc. at the time was made by Polk electronics that fits the
bill, just slide in or out of the holder power pin engages as you slide into
position. I still see these on Ebay from time to time.
Best Regards, Ken Roehl

I permanently mounted the mounting clip to the plastic portion of the
windshield header and hooked up the power cord to the wires for the dome
light. The detector hangs between the header and the mirror. When I get out,
I pull out the plug and slide off the detector with one hand.

Not necessary to be a '99. My '96 has a dome light. I take it from
your message that a '90 does not?

Well, mine doesn't. It's a 90 A package. It just has the "knee

Alright, that does it -- I'm confused enough to finally admit it. Where the
heck is a domelight in a Miata? I thought dome lights were only in cars
with non-removeable tops, so now I'm curious. I have a 91 and she has the
knee lights, as someone put it, too. Maybe the dome light is in the
console??? Is that what you mean? Lol. Here we go again . . .

SERRANO has a "dome light" in the middle of the top windshield frame.
However, he doesn't have the miniskirt illumination system of earlier
models. I think it's probably about a draw.

The rear view mirror is glued to the windshield and the hole left behind is
filled with a little light.
I keep all my interior lights turned off anyhow.

Oh my gosh Jerry -- "miniskirt illumination system." You're always
thinking, huh? ;o) The kneelights are convenient for soft lighting, but
not very bright. I think the dome light idea is kind of nifty. Great --
out comes the checkbook again. Do they make an aftermarket model that can
be installed with some ease in an old 91 like mine? That trunk light Ron
Zander mentioned sure sounds cool, too. Argh. "Oh, Santa . . ." =o)

I've got the lighted mirror in Dino...works great...not hard to
install...passenger can have their side on while driving at night (map
reading, etc.) without bothering the vision of the driver. Good investment.

Where do you route the wires to? I take it there's no way to hide them? Or
perhaps you run the wiring through the headboard (sorry -- don't know what
ya call it -- the part where the soft top latches into)? Where did you get
the lighted mirror?
Thanks. =o)

The mirror replaces the factory one, and the wires go through the
windshield header and are attached to the wiring for the regular interior
lights...come on when the door is opened. I don't remember which vendor I
bought it from, but IIRC, most of them have them.
