My son just called me and says his '99 cuts out while running down
the road, sits for a while
and starts right up but won't start right after it has shut down. He
replaced the fuel filter as
he thought it might be fuel starvation. Took it to Autozone and they
couldn't hook up their
diagnostic stuff to the underhood connection. Is there another
connector under the dash on
the '99??? He says his father-in-law checked with one of his buddies
at the NAPA place and
was told Mazda's of that vintage have problems with the engine temp sender ???
He also said after restarting it breaks up at 4K in first, 3.5K in
second, 3K in third and so on
breaking up at lower revs in each higher gear.
Any thoughts???

First the AutoZone guys are idiots.
The OBDII is under the dash in the fusebox area on the left side of the
driver.
Not heard of a problem with the temp sender but the standard answer would be
how old are the plugs and wires. Start simple.

Yeah, the OBDII port is pretty straightforward, but is the car throwing any
codes? Wouldn't the check engine light come on if there were any codes to
check?
When my '99 started running rough and missing, the plugs and wires cured
it. I'm pretty sure it didn't throw any codes, just ran poorly. It never
got to the point where it would die on the street, however.

First, I am not a mechanic and do little work on my cars any more so you are
taking your chances.
My guess would be ignition. The normal wires and plugs first. Also, I
think I read some place that the 99 had issues with their coil packs.
Best of luck.

I had a simmilar problem but not exact as yours... Since it's a 99 the next step I would take would be to replace the pickup unit and pump in the tank...
The porblem I had was (and it only happened on the track with sticky tires) the engine would cut out on left turns, and only when I'm pushing the car to the limit of it's cornering ability. I replaced anything fuel related all the way to the engine with not luck. What it was: It was eclectrical... One time I was under the car between track session I was just following the wire from the battery to the engine, and right where it went over the top of the tranny I moved it around. The next time I was out on the track it was better not fixed. So it was the battery cable when under the g-forces of a hard left turn would short against the tranny... I replace the wire from the battery to the motor and that fixed it!

Chris, finally, someone that has seen the problem with my car. I think I've just about
replaced everything fuel and ignition related. I was about to throw a main harness at
the problem. This one had me stumped and a lot of other people stumped too. The race
car has been parked because it was very frustrating not being able to recreate the
problem on the street.
Would you happen to have a part number for that battery cable? Or a better
description? I have a parts microfiche, so if you would be willing to dig up a
part number I can order it.
Regards,
Brian
