Yesterday my car got a bit on the warm side - I've linearlized my guage, but as I'm still in the process of getting it set right, I'm not sure of the readings. The car was low on coolant due to a pinhole leak in a heater hose - the temp came up from normal, but I DO remember once noting where TOO hot would be, and I was below this, but the heater stopped heating once before I stopped to check it out and once on the way directly home from there. I really don't think I did anything phenominally bad to the motor, but I assume I might as well check things out.
My question - aside from draining the oil and the water and looking at them, is there anything I should do? My assumption is if they look fine, there's nothing to worry about. I didn't drive for more than 2 or 3 minutes with the guage above normal, but I'd still like to be sure. What do I look for? How much is "bad"? There's a chance there's a SMALL amount of oil (a few drops) in the water, anyways, just from reusing funnels and such durring the few times I'd drained and refilled the motor, but I'm assuming and real problem will be obvious?
Just looking for a litte guidance before I tear into it tonight.
-Abe.

I think your car was not damaged.
I installed new thermostat, radiator and heater hoses on my
1991 Mazda pickup truck. Drained coolant, put on the new
pieces, filled radiator w/water. When I went for a drive,
the temp gauge didn't go up, the heater failed to transmit
heat. I drove it for three miles like this thinking the
thermostat hadn't opened so coolant wasn't circulating.
Evidently there was air in the cooling system and
insufficient coolant, so I probably got the engine super
hot. After I got home, I let it cool off, drained what
water was in it. Refilled with water and antifreeze and
bled air by loosening a sending unit on the thermostat
housing.
That was a month ago and I've driven the truck a few
hundred miles and apparently, no damage was done as
everything is ok on the truck.

* My question - aside from draining the oil and the water and
looking at them, is there anything I should do?
Fix the leak in your radiator hose, heat is bad juju !
Any loss in pressure is going to make things heat up more.
When you were talking about your turbo I seem to recall you put one of
those sh*t hot Flyin Miata radiators in, they're the muts nuts and are
designed for the job.
Hows the air going to your radiator, not blocked too much by poorly
mounted licence plate, huge intercooler, aircon condenser? Have you done
that mod that will let both fans run at the same time (with the aircon
both on/off) ?
I hope nothing bad happened to your new engine.

Thanks all! It seems the consensus is not to worry. Easy for some things (like housecleaning), hard for others. But I will strive to do my very best. Saves me a lot of work and nervousness.
-Abe.
P.S. I did go through and check a few resistences on the guage after linearlizing it. I'd call it calibrated - only after I realized I'd be in there again to recenter it, I immediately forgot all the values. :-)

Weather Report: The only dark clouds are the ones in the sky in unseasonable rain for Sun Diego. I doubt I have more troubles than everyone else, I think I'm just more likely to ask first and shoot later. There's a lot of good advice here that it would be foolishness not to take advantage of.
Yeah - I have a Twincooler. I'd heard one report of them not being as good as the regular race radiator, and lots of reports saying they are fine. So I buy into it.
I DO need to put some sort of tray under the car to get airflow through the radiator, but aside from when I'm low on coolant, the guage looks as fake as it did before I linearilzed it. The FM system works great and the car goes up to temp and stays there. New hose from Mazdacomp on the way - I probably could have gotten away with generic stuff from Kragen's, but it was only $8.
I am not sure if the dual-fan thing only applies to older cars? I'm not sure - but would like to do it after I trust the car to run a week without a minor problem, if it's needed.
