I'd like to know what people think about the Jackson Racing stainless
cat-back system. I've found a used on on eBay w/ a current bid of $76. A
Mazda recycler in the Sacramento area has pulled it from a junker. Judging
from the photo, it's got the usual wear and tear but it looks intact; I'll
be contacting them for more specific info if I decide to bid on it.
I read the reviews on Miata.net; they seemed to be a mixed bag. Several
people complained about rattling and poor fit within the bumper cutout. Any
advice/thoughts appreciated...

Yeah, it doesn't quite fit in there square in the center. I fixed this
problem by going to a muffler shop and having them bend the pipe so that it
would fit right and not hit the rear bumper. Other than that, I've been
pleased as punch. It has a nice tone and is just loud enough that you know
it's there. =-) Also, it doesn't stink (not that it should, I guess). You
will however, probably find yourself putting chrome polish on it if you're
as "anal" as I am . . . those pretty chrome pipes show EVERYTHING.
BW -- JR headers, hi-flo cat, and cat back with sport muffler (and other
things, but we need not get into that)

I had one on my '95M and I really liked it, it had a nice sound but not too
loud. I only had the car for a few months with that system before I had to
sell it so I can't speak to the longevity of it.

I give it a thumbs up......
I dont like making all the noise up and down the street or as soon as I am
pulling away from a light. I have the whole JR solution to exhaust
(Headers, Cat-Back, and Exhaust Pipe) [came with the car], and I can say
that the sound is mellow and somewhat deep. I am very pleased with
it...there are times when I do want to wake up the dead, and when I floor
it, it still delivers a full rich sound that makes me smile.

There have been at least three distinct JR exhaust systems over the years.
Quality has ranged from unacceptable to excellent. You can identify them
from the exhaust tip: slanted (run away), rolled (nice setup) and the
current "big enough to stick your head into".

I think mine falls on the rolled (nice round exhaust hole about 2 3/4 to 3"
at the opening....It isnt slanted (that I know), and not even my dog can fit
his head into this one......
Where can one find the different reviews on the different types? (just
curiosity)

I replaced my OE exhaust a couple years with the JR exhaust ago after the original headers cracked. I wasn't aware of the different systems JR made, but it sounds like I lucky to get the rolled edge variety. While I am very happy with the headers, personally I liked the mellow OE exhaust sound better than the JR which gets a little loud on long trips. Nonetheless, many prefer a more agressive sound, so if this is what you're looking for, the fit and finish is excellent. Good luck! The price sounds great if nothing else.

There is no place that acknowledges the different designs, as far as I
know. JR doesn't advertise it. The slant-tips were made by Dynomax, I
think. The rolled tip was Stromung (they make FM exhausts now) and I don't
know who makes the big-tip version. At least, this is what I remember. My
favorite is the middle version, the Stromung.
That one on eBay does look a bit like the new one, but it's really hard to
tell from such a picture.

Yes, I bought mine from a local autocrosser who only put about 20 miles on
it. But it was an older system because it had the rolled tip. I helped Bonni
install her system and it's the newer style with the bigger tip (which is
one of the reasons it didn't fit the opening in the rear valance well). That
one is louder than the one I had but it's still got a pretty nice sound in
my opinion.

There have been at least three distinct JR exhaust systems over the years.
Quality has ranged from unacceptable to excellent. You can identify them
from the exhaust tip: slanted (run away), rolled (nice setup) and the
current "big enough to stick your head into".

Mine is the "good" one .. . not the coffee can, not the slanted .. .it's a
decent, nicely concealed pipe. The only reason it didn't fit right was the
angle of the cat back pipe that led to the exhaust tip. Once I had it
fixed, it fits perfectly. =-) And it's not loud . . . except for those
days when you're tired or have a headache. Lol.

While I would rule out the current one just for the looks, I found the
rolled one pretty good in terms of sound and fit, but not in terms of
durability. It cracked in several areas, seams were not welded
properly and were leaking since new. I know that my usage pattern is
not exactly average, but the Thermal that I have now seems to be
much
more robust. I do know a few other cases over here of cracked JR
exhausts (rolled tip).
FWIW, YMMV

I think yours is the latest model though considering that you just bought it
last year. The one I bought from Tom Kubo was definitely an older model as
the tip was much smaller and much quieter.

The big tip was being sold in 1998. It's got a rolled edge on it as well.

What exactly do you mean by "rolled edge"? I don't think mine has that.
IIRC, my tip is (I think) 4 inches in diameter. Hope that helps.

Meaning it doesn't look like someone just took a piece of pipe and cut it
off. I believe they are both resonated tips, but I don't exactly have them
all here in front of me. The 4" tip is the big one.
