Had that oil, lube & filter done today. I supplied the OEM filter and
the Mobil 1 Super Synthetic 10W30, and they charged $20 cash. They let
me watch, too; so, now I know how to do it myself. I knew it was a
rather easy job; but, I had no idea it was *THAT* easy.

Can't I just jack the car up and slide underneath?

I bought a set of Rhino Ramps at Kragen ... use them for the Tahoe
and the Miata... that way I don't have to worry about the jack+jackstands.
It's also easy to change the tranny and differential fluid...

I was just teasing you.
I will try most things but not oil........just not interested in jacks,
oil sludge, recycling, etc...........and too uncomfortable.
I'd rather pay someone a few bucks to wrestle with the filter.
Thankfully, I have switched to Redline Syn in engine and MT90 in Trans.
Good luck.........but you have a ways to go before you tackle the
filter...3-5000 miles.

***Yup. Don't forget to use jackstands and chock the rear tires.

What do I do with the transmission? I thought a manual transmission car
doesn't require transmission fluid?

It's full of gear lube, you should change it periodically. It probably has
dino lube in it. Synthetic would be better.

I use Redline MTL, others use Redline MT90

Chock the rear tires:
Put a big piece of wood, or a brick, or something else that will
prevent rolling behind each tire. It just occurs to me that I need to
be chocking the FRONT of the tires, too. Anyway, the point is to keep
the car from rolling, kicking out the jack stands, and crushing you.

I bought my jack stands at the local auto parts store. About eighteen
bucks US for two stands (The higher rated they are tonnage-wise, the
better).

I changed my Miata's oil myself for the first time just a few weeks
ago. It really isn't hard, especially using the instructions found in
the garage section of Miata.net. (Which I think Keith wrote, isn't that
right, Keith?)

In my case, the filter came off easily but the drain plug required a
very strong effort. Some gorilla at the dealership put it on last.
Never again! Otherwise, it was easy and simple. even jacking the car up
with the stock scissors jack was easy.

***Well, if you have the front of the car raised, the chock just the rears
(and put the E brake on -- doesn't hurt). With the rear up, chock the
fronts. As long as the car is on a fairly level surface, all should be
good. I put a tire underneathe the car just in case, nonetheless. I might
suffer some damage if the car falls, but not nearly as much with a tire or
two under there.

***Note the spelling . . . chalk is that calcium-rich stuff you write on
chalk boards with. Wheel chocks are as was just posted. It doesn't take
much weight, but it will help prevent the car from rolling.

What I mean to say is to chock the front and rear of the rear tires so
they can't roll in either direction. The front tires are, of course, up
in the air, which makes them hard to chock...

Yes, and always with the e-brake on.

It's a bit different than the fluid in an automatic, which serves as a
lubricant for the gears and bearings, a hydraulic fluid for the shifting
mechanisms, and a coolant for the torque converter and clutches. It's a
very light oil, almost like the tap water in Burbank, CA in color and
consistency.

Manual transmissions use a much heavier gear oil, which functions only
as a lubricant. The nature of the fluid itself, as well as the absence
of friction clutches in the gearbox, mean that the oil in a manual
transmission requires much less frequent replacement. Mazda suggests
30,000 miles or 30 months, which is probably well on the conservative
side. I'd imagine that a lot of folks have never changed their
transmission oil.

The differential uses essentially the same type of lubricant, though a
slightly different viscosity is specified.
