I am now using a Mazda brand oil filter in my Miata, but it's the longer one
that fits my Mazda B2600 pickup truck. Anyone have any comments on this
practice? Seems like I'd be getting greater filtration, and it does fit fine.
I have noticed that the US made Mazda filters are not quite the same weight
as the Japanese-made ones I used to get at the Mazda dealer, so I suspect
that product quality has deteriorated on this item.

I don't believe you will get any better filtration performance, however, you
will have more "stand-by" oil at startup. As long as the filter fits into
its space and the fitting is good, there's no problem using a non-OEM size
in there.

Not necessarily -- the element can be made of teflon, etc. -- a lighter
compound, but not necessarily inferior.
