Tonight on the way home some guy in a VW jetta thought he'd show me his
stuff. I showed him my tail lights 3 times in a row (I love my car, picture
a giant grin), but anyway I finally hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear. It hit
at about 7200, it is very dramatic and lets you know in a hurry that it's
time to grab the next gear :-) Damn thing feels so good at that rpm,
feels like it'll pull to 8000 easy.

So I'm no longer a rev limiter virgin......WOOHOO!!!!!
.......as for the rest of me........just kidding.......no comments

I hit it autocrossing a bunch and I was wondering about what speed mine
jumps in at..seemed about 55-58 or somewhere in that range. I had to test
it getting on a freeway when I could actually look down. I agree, it does
feel great up in that range.

But doesn't it feel ever so strange?!? Lol. I was freaked out when I first
hit it at Thunderhill. Once I realized what had happened, I yelled out to
spectators at the east side, along the hot pits, "REV LIMITER!!!" And in a
Miata with the top down already gaining attention for keeping ahead of even
a 2002 Z06, believe me, they heard me! It was WEIRD!!!

I must ask though .. . doesn't hitting the rev limiter hurt your car?!? I
know a gal who's an autox champ that according to Scot Zediker runs through
cars mostly BECAUSE she is CONSTANTLY hitting the limiter. Could this be
why she goes through so many engines? Scot? I mean, shouldn't we stray
from pushing this on the track? I try real hard not to hit it, as it just
feels so wrong (but in a good way . . .so there ya go, Zander . . .lol). I
don't plan to rip it at the limiter much, but do advise of the consequences
if you would, guys and gals. Thanks.

At the rev limiter you're not going any faster & the engine isn't
working at it's best...the trick is to keep it just below. I hit mine
during autocross all the time, never had a problem. I've heard it was
set several hundred RPM below the real danger zone, although I can't
verify that.

No, it doesn't hurt anything. That's why it's there, so you don't venture
into realms where you could do some damage.
On the race track, I have trouble hearing my own car when there are other
cars around, and consequently hit the rev limiter all the time. It's
infuriating as I lose a car length on the other guy every darn time it
happens. Gotta get a shift light.

That's exactly how I hit it at Thunderhill -- too many damn loud cars, lol.
And instead of a shift light, maybe hard wire it to a cattle prod. Lol.

If you want more RPM, you could always add an aftermarket ECU of some kind.
>From what I've heard, the stock valvetrain can handle 8K without any serious
consequences (aside from somewhat faster wear, of course).

The champ in question (incidentally, she got two of those championships in a
'95 Miata R; anyone wanna figger out who she is?) has not, to my knowledge,
blown any engines. But one of the cars she competes in did eat its
transaxle shortly before the '00 Nationals.

I would never let her drive anything I own, simply because (by her own
admission, even!) she just beats the ever-loving $#!+ out of everything she
drives. Don't get me wrong, I drive Kate pretty hard too, with fairly
regular trips to redline, and I see the rev limiter on average about once or
twice a week. But I've learned how hard a car can be driven, mostly because
I trashed most of my previous cars (three clutches, an engine and a
transaxle in my Honda, two engines in my Sprint, an automatic transmission
in my Z).

Ummmmm, didn't you blow your torsen or something at Sears Point in Kate (the
Miata) too? Take it easy on her, Scot. ;-)

You could easily rev your car to 8000 with the right ECU but if you get your
car on a dyno you will see that the power curve drops at about 6900 and it
keeps dropping it is actually a disadvantage to rev it past the point that
the power starts to drop off,and as a few people have found the Miata engine
doesn't like big revs and tends to break crankshafts at 8000 plus.

Oh, I'm sorry -- I thought you meant she trashed her engines. And surely
everyone could figure out who she is, but since she's not on the list I
didn't wanna give her name out. Those in the know will KNOW who she is.

Hunh? Who found that? Several folks have found the Miata (with stiffer
valve springs) to be able to run to 9000 RPM in short bursts (IE not held
there for long periods) and 8000 reliably. True, in stock form you don't
make any more power above 6900 or so, but I don't think you'll have to worry
about the crank going out...just increased bearing wear.

Aw, shaddap!! ;)

It wasn't a Torsen, it was a VLSD. Of course, the 6" rearend on the '90-'93
Miata is known for being a bit weak, and my kludged-together limited slip
with too much gar lash was probably destined to fail. I certainly didn't
help things by taking the car to a track....

The new gears are holding up just fine, thank you. And the brand-spankin'
new VLSD unit even allows a bit of power oversteer in the lower gears!

Good point. However, anyone looking for more revs might well have made some
improvements to airflow through the engine, so the curve might not be
dropping off as rapidly. I certainly don't need any more rpm on my
bone-stock engine, and I rarely shift above 6800 anyway.

But if I had a nice, free-flowing intake and exhaust installed, it might be
worth my while to up the rev ceiling a bit. And if I was going over 8k, it
would probably be with a full-race engine anyway, so the stock valvetrain
(and lots of other stock bits) might be gone.

While the power does drop off at 6900 or so, it's not like it bottoms out...
I would imagine that shifting somewhat higher than 7200 would be a bit
faster. This is because you're shifting just bearely past peak power, and
then after the shift you drop a good bit below peak... I think a shift a
little higher than 7200 (maybe 7400 or so) would actually be a bit faster
because you wouldn't drop so far on the power curve...

Am I right on this, Keith? I seem to remember Keith saying that Baby's rev
limiter was somewhere around 7500, but I can't seem to find any dyno results
anywhere to back up what I'm trying to say... (i.e., they all seem to stop
around 7100 or so)
