We drove for about an hour behind a Pontiac Solstice yesterday in West
Virginia. The car had a Michigan "Manufacturer Plate" on it. We've never
seen that before and we were trying to figure out what it was. Any ideas?
FWIW, a 2006 Solstice handles and accelerates much better 1994 Isuzu Pickup
Truck (for those of you who were choosing between the two). My wife and I
were playing high speed paparazzi and were having a hard time getting good
pictures.

Usually used when the car is from the car manufacturer themselves. Sort of
like a Dealer plate but for the car maker. Not a legally registered car but
a street legal car give to a person for a test drive/report/loan.

Larry, you are getting pretty good at these instantaneous replies. At some
point in the future I think it may even be possible for you to reply before
the question is asked <G>.

Doesn't necessarily need to be a street legal car.
Prototypes (that will and can never become street legal cars) are also
driven with manufacturer plates. You could spot them in places like
Death Valley and the like.

Well I guess your right, what I meant by street legal is that it's not a
racecar. Your point is well taken in that it might not be a registerable
vehicle but I think it must be "street legal" in that it has all the items
needed to drive legally on the street. But these tags get used for legal
vehicles too.

We were on I-77 driving south through the toll booths. The rear fascia on the car looked like it was going to fly off at 85 MPH. I wish we had been in the Miata so we could have had some fun!

That's really funny, a few weeks ago I was in West Virginia (just south of berkely springs) and saw a "camoflaged" solstice driving around, I guess they test in the mountains out there?

We were on I-77 driving south through the toll booths. The rear fascia on the car looked like it was going to fly off at 85 MPH. I wish we had been in the Miata so we could have had some fun!

That's really funny, a few weeks ago I was in West Virginia (just south of berkely springs) and saw a "camoflaged" solstice driving around, I guess they test in the mountains out there?

Speaking of the Solstice, I'll be getting a (very) short test drive in one
today. Pontiac is hosting a driving event -somewhat similar to Mazda's Rev
It Up- in Irvine. Last night, I talked with an SDMC member who attended
yesterday and he was extremely under whelmed with the Solstice. He said
people were literally laughing out loud about the poor excuse for a trunk
and that the overall "mood" was one of skepticism.
I plan to take lots of photos and post them to a web photo page. If I
haven't posted the link by Monday, somebody give me a shout to remind me.

Just goes to show you what money does to true journalistic integrity.
Can't remember which magazine it was but this month's issue tested the
Solstice and threw in a Miata and picked the Solstice "For now".
Want to bet advertising dollars had something to do with the choice.

It is all a matter of perspective... The Cab-and-a-Half-Chevy owners laugh
at my Miata trunk too, when they see me drop one tool box into it and then
struggle to fit my lunch kit and back pack around it.
Supposedly, I had a chance to see one up here in Manitoba, but missed it. I
was hoping to do a park beside photo comparison.

At certain angles I like the nose, or at least the general idea, of the nose
of the Solstice. I was a fan of the Dodge Copperhead prototype a while back
and this reminds me of it a bit. But that rear end? They let the Aztec
designer help, didn't they.

I-77? Toll booths?
Isn't that a US interstate highway that was paid for by our taxes?

We were on I-77 driving south through the toll booths. The rear fascia on
the car looked like it was going to fly off at 85 MPH. I wish we had been in
the Miata so we could have had some fun!

Yeah. Stylistically, there's no comparison at all. The Solstice looks more
like a Grand Am than a sportscar.
Remember, though, Pontiac is the company that thought we'd like the Aztec.
Compared to that venture, the Solstice is truly gorgeous. They oughta get
*something* for "most improved."

It's not just the styling. It's the sizing. It looks bloated. And from
what I understand putting up the top by yourself is a marathon exercise.

I wouldn't be ready to say its not a sports car, but look at all that
rubber... Imagine stuffing in a 2.0 Uber...

I have spent quite a bit of time with both the Solstice and the Sky,
just couldn't drive them and I've got to say they are very good looking
in person. In many ways the Sky is the edgier and nicer looking. I
think I like the Solstice dash more tho.
They don't look bloated at all.
There are some angles that I don't like but I definitely like them
much, much more than the new MX5. And then there is the fact that this
is the engine that GM has tested to destruction multiple times to find
the way to give it more power.
I actually have a turbo system sitting in my garage that would fit one.
I have no plans to buy one, but it's nice to know that if I did
upgrades are cheap and plentiful
