Yesterday when I started the car there was a tapping noise which seemed
to be coming from under the dash up behind the steering wheel on the left
side. It wasn't coming from the engine because it didn't change in
intensity when I increased the rev's and I couldn't hear it when I popped
the hood to check. As I was driving the noise increased in intensity and
changed from a tap to a whine and then to something that sounds similar
to a modem when it is trying to connect. As all this was happening the
air bag warning light which has been flashing 10 times for about 5 years
went out and didn't come back on. For the rest of the 30 minute drive
the sound continued and the light stayed off.

I am assuming the two are related and that it is some type of relay under
the dash but I thought I'd check to see if anyone ever had a similar
experience.

Sounds like you have a ground short somewhere. I don't think the
tapping & whining noise was coming from any of the airbag related
items, but the failure of your blinking light is probably related the
failure of this other item. Good luck with your diagnosis.

Its a known problem that if you disconnect the air bag light a warning
buzzer will go off. So I'm going to assume that air bag light finally blew
after 5 years of being on and you are now starting to hear the warning
buzzer. The easiest thing would be to replace the bulb.

Check this out on miata.net about your 10 blinks of the air bag light:

I have got an issue with my front brakes. About 2 weeks ago I noticed a
slight squeak from the front under low speed light braking. I assumed the
pads needed to be changed, and since I wanted to upgrade the pads, I ordered
some Hawk pads. I put only about 100 miles on the car since the squeak was
first noticed. Yesterday I noticed a hot brake smell coming from the front
so I stopped and checked and the left front was much hotter that the right.
I jacked up the wheels and the left front was dragging. I removed pads and
caliper and the pads had plenty of life left and the inboard one had a very
slight angle to the pad like it was cocked. I pushed the caliper back with
a small c clamp. It went back easy but did require a little more effort to
get it started. I noticed that the pad slides did not look well lubricated
so I did a quick clean and put on some antiseize. I then reassembled the
brakes and went for some quick hard stops around the block, when I returned
the brake was dragging again. I jacked up the front and pried on the
caliper with a regular screw drive through the spoke in the rim and was able
to release the brakes with minor effort. The two c springs on top of the
pads are in place to help the brakes release. The car does not pull now or
before. My best guess, unless someone has a better idea is to replace the
calipers and do a full thorough brake clean. lube etc.

P.S. the roters are not scored and their are no pulsations in the peddle.
The peddle feel is solid and the car is a '93.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Greg

Well the airbag light still works fine because the next time I drove it
the thing blinked and there was no buzzer. It's is definitely an
intermittent problem.
