If I remember correctly, in the late 60's all cars were based on a 65 Ford
frame and had to use the stock floor pan. But as the manufactures changed
over to Unibody and the supply of stock frames became short, Nascar allowed
teams to construct their own from rectangular tubing. Things have just
progressed from there. Today's cars aren't really that different from what
was run back in the early days. But with teams having to build 10 or more
cars for a season using a production car is really out of the question.
