I attended an autox in Columbus, OH last weekend presented by the Buckeye Miata Club. One of the cars was highly modified and had a naked timing belt. The water pump housing was painted to provide a bit of modesty. This look really cool. Is there any downside to doing this other than the danger of getting your necktie tangled in it and strangling yourself to death?

Most people do this because they have adjustable cam gears.
To do it on an engine without them might be a little "ricey".

Mine are exposed (cam cover cut for weight reduction and "cool" factor). I
would say my modification is 51% rice and 49% race. I would be lying if I
said that I didn't like the looks of it (stock cams have been painted
yellow). On the plus side, if I ever lose my timing belt the troubleshooting
will be easy as well as the replacement of the belt.

We have had a car lose the timing belt on the dyno. Exposed gears,
some little nut (a shiny bling cover) came loose and went through the
belt. The car kept running, but the belt snapped immediately the next
time we went to start the engine.
I have exposed belts on a couple of cars. It's a risk, but I need to
be able to access the gears. We do have a special dyno cam cover that
we use on some cars, then swap in a full coverage version once we're
done.

It is, admittedly, nice because you don't have to take the cam cover off to do a timing belt job ;-)

To do it on an engine without them might be a little ?ricey?.
