>> acts of criminals. Perhaps this explains why London's violent crime
>> rate is now higher than New York's?
>Where do you get THAT? Course, as US cities go, New York has a fairly low
>violent crime rate.
Something came over (US) National Public Radio a few weeks ago, commenting
on Rudi G's OBE and subsequent visit with the Mayor of London, where they
were having discussions on his tactics in reducing violent crime in NYC. I
seem to recall a statistic of 7 times more murders in London than NYC, which
seemed positively unbelievable to me at the time.
Not getting involved in the gun thing: you'll never convince side or the
other of any point. I can see both points of view: I have lost a friend to a
gun accident, and both friends and I have been on the wrong end of one as
well.
But then I have lost friends to drunken drivers, and workmates to Sep 11.
The current western notion of the right to a totally safe, controlled
society is just not possible. Even a totalitarian society doesn't work...

I used to live in South Africa. Amongst others, the native African wild cat
has virtually disappeared as a species, having interbred to a severe extent
with the common domestic (so called) item.
Here in central NH, I don't have any pets, but there were a few squirrels,
birds and stuff that got accustomed to us and kept us amused. After a while
they all started disappearing, about the time the neighbor's cat started to
make (some extremely discouraged) visits.
Fortunately it was disappeared. The native fauna has started to recover.
Personally I figure that if an animal runs around loose, it is going to
suffer the same treatment and fate as any wild animal.
Really funny/sad part is, a week or two later, the neighbors started to
worry about where both their cats were (one eventually returned). Took them
a week even begin to think there was a problem. This in an area populated
by most of the usual predators...
<<By the time all our native fauna has disappeared, it will be too late.
Hang a bell
around their neck, preferably one that weighs around 50 pounds!
