I looked, but did not find, the detailed instructions for advancing the
timing on my 1999 Miata to about 14 degrees. I thought I remember reading a
while back that a jumper must be placed somewhere where adjusting the time.
What is the material that must be removed - plastic or metal - from the
pulse pickup?
I'm ready to do this mod today if someone can share the step by step
instructions with me.
Thanks in advance,
Tomas

I always thought that this was a recommended mod. Any other thoughts about
this?

On a 99 you can't just put in a jumper and adjust the timing. You have
to make modifications to the bracket that holds the sensor.

Advancing the timing is recommended for pre-'99 cars. I honestly don't know
that this will give you any increase in power on a '99. I wouldn't do it to
mine, unless I saw dyno results indicating it had some effectiveness.

: On a 99 you can't just put in a jumper and adjust the timing. You have
: to make modifications to the bracket that holds the sensor.
The other part of the story, of course, is that the 99+ also includes a
knock sensor and circuitry that adjusts the timing to the presence (or
absence) of knock. It's VERY likely that any changes made by modifying the
bracket would simply be cancelled out by the ECU. This one easily falls
into the "just plain not worth it" category, IMHO.
It's a different story for normally-aspirated pre-99's.

Personally, on an FI '99, I haven't seen that the OEM knock sensor
arrangement is all that effective, at least for FI use. Have heard some
light detonation on the dyno that the OEM ECU didn't compensate/pull timing
on.
It _does_ seem the sensor itself is adequate for the task, as I've monitored
the sensor's output and it _will_ pick up knock. The problem I suspect is
in the OEM ECU programming is limited to a degree or two of retard, so the
'fault' is in the software.
For FI use with any piggyback timing system(like the Link Piggyback) that
doesn't let you set your total timing and is limited to retard only, were
you to do the bracket mod, you could also adjust the timing being pulled to
compensate....and _potentially_ gain some low end power.
Many non-FI M2 owners seem happy with the mod, although IMHO it's a bit too
'pick a spot to drill and do it'- if you're off and adjust the timing too
far, I'd just as soon have not touched it at all without any programmable
means of compensating if required....something of course the non-FI M2's
don't generally have. (Of course, Shiv's M2 pre-SC with TEC-II being the
exception...)
