So, drove the Miata to work after lunch, parked and left the motor
running while I lifted the top up to keep ravens from pooping on my
seats. I was parked between two minivans and noticed a sharp tapping
noise. Uh oh!
These are the same noises I wrote about before going to Anchorage last
week, just this time I was able to hear them up close.
Would using 88.5 octane gas with 12° BTDC timing cause this? I just
changed the oil not too long ago, the pressure is still up and the
dipstick shows clean oil. It's only like 45° outside, so it's not like
it's hot or anything. What do you all think? If it's the gas, I still
have 3/4ths of a tank left, what should I do about that?

Not likely knock. You'd have to try VERY hard to get an
engine to knock at idle...even then I don't know if it's
possible. Knock usually happens at low RPM at high load.
Might just be noisy injectors? Mine tick quite audibly
sometimes...

What would cause noisy injectors? I ran a bottle of Techron through a
thousand or so miles ago, but I believe this same prob happened last
summer and I just attributed it to needing an oil change. It did seem
to lessen after I changed the oil, but that was getting near autumn and
I wasn't driving it as hard or as much.

Not sure what causes noisy injectors. I dont think it
really means anything is wrong. Might just be noisy
lifters too. Try searching around the engine bay with a
piece of vacuum line held to your hear...will be able to
pinpoint location this way. See if it gets louder if
you remove the oil filler...

It's probably just noisy lifters. Mine does it every
now & then...noisly as hell, especially at start up then
it goes away after getting some pressure built up.

I've always used a long screwdriver for finding the source of noises like
this. Put the plastic handle end to your ear then touch the tip to various
engine parts (not the moving ones of course). If it's lifters it should be
real loud when you listen to the valve cover. Also removing the filler cap
is a good idea.
What type and weight of oil are you using??

I'm running 10W-30 Mobil 1.
When I get home tonight, if the car is making the noises again, I'll
poke around the engine bay a bit and see if I can locate the source.
Then I'll try taking off the oil filter and putting the end of the
screwdriver near the timing belt and see if that helps in locating it...
(Just kiddin' about that last part, of course!)
Probably just noisy lifters, as has been suggested, I just get anal
about sounds that don't sound Miataly. :)

Might also be something loose like a heat shield or bracket. I had a nasty
rattle a few years back and found one of the nuts on the starter bracket was
missing. Made a horrid rattle at idle and at 3-3.5K RPM.
