Mail From: mhagerla (Michael Hagerla)
It is good to be back. I believe all year miata seat rails are identical,
thus all seats can be interchanged between any year- is that correct? I
have the opportunity to swap out my torn leather seats out of my newly
acquired '94 with some 1996 M edition seats.
The owner is unable to measure the dimensions of the seat rails for me as he
is too busy and the seats are in storage. has anybody done this swap
before?
Thanks all!
Mike

I changed out my old 91s with a 97 last summer - the only difference is the
seat belt holder placement. You should have no problem at all. Congrats on
a great purchase.

Mike,
funny that you should mention this. i just did the same type of swap this
afternoon! i put in a pair of m1 seats into my m2. in my case, i had to take
off the seat rails from the m1 seats and bolt on my m2 rails. very simple.
the bolt patterns (seat to rail and rail to car) are identical from m1 to m2
so between m1 and m1..........should be a no brainer!
enjoy!

For some reason the M2 seats sit much higher than the M1 seats...least the
leather. I sometimes hit the top in the M2 (with the seat back full forward)
and I'm only 5'3".
Bill, ask Rick W. about the seat mod he had Brad do on his Super Sport. Was
kind of rough for me to drive it as I felt I couldn't get close enough to the
pedals/wheel but by removing a little of the padding from the seat bottom and
back he gained some significant (as it appeared to me) leg room while still
maintaining the stock seat look and feel.

Bill,
depends what you mean by room.
i guess it did buy a little bit of leg room. mainly because the early m1
seat's bottom cushion is noticeably more raked than the more horizontal m2
seats. the m1 seats are more "bucket" like. which bends my knees more and
effectively shortens my legs. so i have to set the seat a bit closer (which
is fine). i'm not that tall so leg room isn't really a concern for me, ask
Keith.
one other thing i noticed, the m1 seats are also noticeably higher than the
m2 seats. while the steering wheel angle in the m1 is "higher" (more raked?)
than the m2's steering wheel angle. this means that with the m1 seat in the
m2, there's less room between thighs and bottom of the steering wheel (i
have a 350mm dia momo monte carlo in there too). this also means that a
taller person is closer to bumping their head on the roof (if you have a
hardtop on like i do right now) without removing some seat foam. still, the
m1 seats are much better seat in both comfort and support than the m2's. :-)

it's all about Sparco seating...I'm 6'3 and I now sit super low with plenty
of leg room with a Sparco Sprint seat. The beauty of it is that it is a
cheap seat, similar to what you'd pay for a used oem seat, AND it bolts to
the stock sliders.
just my .02, but if you're gonna go to the trouble, why not upgrade?

Yeah, well that's okay if your rear end fits into those seats
comfortably...or fits at all! hehe
I bought some Mazdaspeed type F sport seats and while they are slightly
tighter in the hips(not as comfy as stock in other words), they bolt right
in and they hold you in the seat during high speed cornering- not quite as
well as a full race seat, but they do the trick.

it's all about Sparco seating...I'm 6'3 and I now sit super low with plenty
of leg room with a Sparco Sprint seat. The beauty of it is that it is a
cheap seat, similar to what you'd pay for a used oem seat, AND it bolts to
the stock sliders.
just my .02, but if you're gonna go to the trouble, why not upgrade?

Cat,
What I'm interested in is whether the M1 seats in an M2 give some legroom. A
gazelle like me doesn't fit in M2 seats (leather at least). I'm fine in my
M1s, but have my knees in the air in the M2.

For some reason the M2 seats sit much higher than the M1 seats...least the
leather. I sometimes hit the top in the M2 (with the seat back full
forward) and I'm only 5'3".
Bill, ask Rick W. about the seat mod he had Brad do on his Super Sport. Was
kind of rough for me to drive it as I felt I couldn't get close enough to
the pedals/wheel but by removing a little of the padding from the seat
bottom and back he gained some significant (as it appeared to me) leg room
while still maintaining the stock seat look and feel.

Bill,
depends what you mean by room.
i guess it did buy a little bit of leg room. mainly because the early m1
seat's bottom cushion is noticeably more raked than the more horizontal m2
seats. the m1 seats are more "bucket" like. which bends my knees more and
effectively shortens my legs. so i have to set the seat a bit closer (which
is fine). i'm not that tall so leg room isn't really a concern for me, ask
Keith.
one other thing i noticed, the m1 seats are also noticeably higher than the
m2 seats. while the steering wheel angle in the m1 is "higher" (more raked?)
than the m2's steering wheel angle. this means that with the m1 seat in the
m2, there's less room between thighs and bottom of the steering wheel (i
have a 350mm dia momo monte carlo in there too). this also means that a
taller person is closer to bumping their head on the roof (if you have a
hardtop on like i do right now) without removing some seat foam. still, the
m1 seats are much better seat in both comfort and support than the m2's. :-)
