I enjoy my Miata but am having a hard time with all of the noise. At 70
mph it is just plain loud. Note that there are no modifications on my
'97 Miata.
Are there any good ideas for sound deadening without resorting to the
use of a hard top?

Mail From: keith (Keith Tanner)
We were chatting about this last month. Here's my suggestion:
"The stuff I used is a fibre mat with foil on each side. It's similar to the
sort of stuff that's used to insulate pipes, but instead of cheesy yellow
foam it's made of cotton (I think). Much lighter than Dynamat and the
insulating properties are useful as well - good for putting on hot
transmission tunnels, for example. We use it for heat control in some of
our more extreme cars.
It's "The Insulator" from Bonded Logic
(<bondedlogic.com/>bondedlogic.com/). You
can buy it from a bunch of suppliers such as Aircraft Spruce. A 4x6' sheet
will cover the rear bulkhead and parcel tray, which is all I did in this
car. When driving on the highway with the hardtop on, no tire or exhaust
noise is transmitted through the car. It comes from outside instead of
through the trunk. I'm really happy with how well it worked out, definitely
a cost-effective upgrade when you're taking a long highway trip."

Seriously, ear plugs
I second that. I got some great ones from... agh. Can't remember the
name but if you do a search on miata.net for "ear plugs" youll see a
long thread with a highly recommended company. I want to say Ecoustics
or something like that

I'm going to add a third for earplugs, but I'll go one step further.
My wife is an Audiologist who makes custom molded earplugs that fit your
ear perfectly. They allow you to hear everything you normally would,
just quieter. I have been wearing them in the car on the expressway
for years. In fact, I now use earplugs when I race the SpecMiata and
even just cutting the lawn, using the leaf blower & the string
trimmer!
If you're coming to Deals Gap, we'll show you ours & you're welcome to
talk with Julie about how they work.

In GA it is against the law to use earplugs unless they are custom fitted.
Need to start using mine more, huh?

I purchased a large roll of dynomat type stuff a few years ago (I think it
was $50 or $75 for a huge roll - maybe 3 square yards?) and put it several
places in the car. The difference was amazing.
A wind blocker also helps out quite a bit with the noise.
I'm assuming you are talking about wind and road noise, not exhaust noise.

Yep, bikes that make a lot of sense tend to be showroom queens in the
USA. If you want to fill a warehouse with unsold bikes, ask magazine
editors or sport-touring riders what they'd like to see in a bike.

Or can SEE that when they are looking at the driver! It's illegal in NY as well unless there's some sort of
medical/impairment association there. Actually any device that covers both ears is illegal (again without a documented reason).
Here's something I just got this morning off the Dodge Ram list, maybe this stuff is helpful...?

One set of my earplugs are actually Musicians Plugs by a company called
Westone. Julie makes the molds, then the company's lab builds them
custom for my ears. You insert the filter you want for the amount of
sound reduction and they fit in the ear canal like a tiny hearing aid.
No cop would ever even know you're wearing them!
In fact, mine are clear & you really can't see them unless you're
looking for them.

I also wear musician's earplugs when riding motorcycles. They allow
me to hear the intercom system but, keep out the harmful wind noise.
I had these custom made at an audiologist.

Similar to Tom's question - our '97 has a bit of a rattling problem.
Both seats seem to have some play in their tracks to where if there's
nobody in the passenger seat, it will rattle over bumps and such.
Same thing for the steering column - bigger bumps tend to cause it to
rattle. I don't know if these are standard easily-tightened things,
or if they're just an unfixable fact of and aging car?
thanks,
