Is that for a first issuance license? I kinda think not. If they're
letting new 16 yr old drivers loose with nothing more than a checking
account I'm gonna go hide under the bed.

Just about every state will issue a replacement of an out-of-state license
based on the old license alone, the parking lot test I was talking about was
for the initial license.

the original post is a little misleading. several years ago the people at the IL Sec. of State (SOS/DMV) were accepting bribes in exchange for a driver's license. many people were allegedly involved - DMV employees, driving school owners, SOS employees, the Governor's office etc. The ring was broken and the licences were revoked. A friend who took got her license (legitimately) from one of the guilty driving schools had her license revoked. She was given 14 days (?) to take the written and road test again. Unfortunately it took the loss of life to get them to act. The good thing is that many of those responsible are being prosecuted. The DMV have also supposedly made it more difficult to get a license. This is my understanding of what happened.

If you want details, there is plenty of information available on the net (google is your friend). Search for "Governor Ryan License for bribes scandal". That is how they have been referring to it in the press. Ryan was the Sec. of State in 93 when the initial allegations were made public. He went on to become Gov'nor from 98-2002. A few weeks ago he was indicted on various charges including bribery.

Getting back to the original topic - with the many inattentive/distracted drivers on the road, driving cars that are usually several times bigger than my little Miata, a loud horn is necessary for survival. People often change lanes without looking. Having a tiny car (even if it is yellow) doesn't help.

seeing as though i started this thread a while back,
let me relate to you an encounter with an suv that
made me decide it was time for air horns.

imagine if you will, waiting at a red light, a big
honking suv in the left lane, signalling his intention
to turn left. i pull beside him into the right lane
and we wait side by side for the light to turn green.

then the horror begins.

for some reason mr. suv decides he no longer wants to
turn left, but right. he looks out his passenger
window, doesn't see my car and turns into me.

as i saw the mammoth bumper lunge towards my car, the
only reaction i could muster was to lay on the horn.

meeeeeeeeeeeeep.

mr. suv never heard it and just crunched into my
fender and door. it was even more painful listening to
him back out of my car.

if i had the air horns, he probably would have heard
me, and maybe he would stopped.

this little incident cost him $1700 to repair, and
pissed me off. mind you i did get to drive a honda
civic while mine was in the shop, and this gave me the
opportunity to appreciate driving a manual, and the
fine handling of the miata.

i drive my miata as if i'm invisible and try to leave
lots of space around me, but in congested city traffic
it sometimes isn't possible. a loud horn adds some
extra "visibility".

Being both Miata owner as well as "Scooter Trash" for many years, i have
adopted the attitude of "invisibility" long ago. But, just as "loud pipes
save lives" so can loud horns...our little green bundle of joy sports dual
air horns from a parted out Peterbuilt trk. I have the horns mounted
underneath the car with weather caps, the 12v compressor (compliments of JC
Whitney) and the reservoir (homemade from a 16oz steel propane canister) are
mounted neatly in the corner of the trunk with a 12v. switch/valve (used trk
part). Rarely have the need for them but when we do they really get
attention quickly....they have literally been a life saver a few times.
