What would cause my clutch to be really hard to depress? It disengages the
gears just fine and I don't think the clutch travel is too much. It's just
really hard to push the clutch in.

Millie is a 2000 with 80,000 miles.

See, we even talk about Miata's!! :-)

Hey Kat, that is a little odd. Usually when you have trouble with the
clutch system the pedal gets soft or stays the same but doesn't manage to
fully disengage the clutch. The clutch is still disengaging at the same
point in travel and you can shift with no problem but it is just hard to
step on the pedal???

Have you eaten your Wheaties today???? :)

Seriously, my guess would be something you might not like. I'm wondering if
you might not have a problem with the pressure plate. The other choice
might be the master cylinder but I'm not sure why it would get hard to
depress.

Did this happen suddenly or is it something that has developed over time??
Have you driven another 2000 to compare??

True story, we had a club tech day. A woman in the club shows up and says I
have trouble with some lights. We open the hood and on the passenger side
by the firewall is the biggest rats nest you have ever seen. Took 3 people
20 minutes to clean out under the hood. We fixed some wires but suggested
she take the car to a mechanic as it was going to be a long job. She took
the car to the mechanic and he fixed the car. A few days later the car
wouldn't run. She had the car flat bedded to the mechanic. He called her
up and yelled at her that she must be kidding. When he opened the hood not
only was the rats nest back but the rat was sitting in it. The rat went for
a 20 mile ride on the flat bed!!!

Is there a chance that the line is pinched somewhere between the master
cylinder and the slave cylinder? How does the fluid look? Maybe some
gunk obstructing flow in the master cylinder?

Everything lubricated? Could be the throw out bearing is failing/binding.

OK, listening to Kat's trevails, I have to add my own clutch problems.

'91 with 198,500 miles, ACT clutch and lightened flywheel. Every-so-often, the clutch just doesn't want engage properly Pedal feels the same, but have to force into first gear (or reverse), and second gear is a little shaky too. Sometimes even feel it creeping in first gear with the pedal depressed. Normally lasts for a few days and then goes away.

Crud in the hydraulic system? Or ......, what else might it be?

Your clutch is "dragging". Could be a number of causes but the
every-so-often part of the description is intriguing. Is there any rhyme
or reason to it? When it happens, is it right after starting and goes
away after a little driving? After parking for an extended period?
During periods when the humidity is high? Have you monitored your fluid
level to see if there's a slow leak?
