This is going to be a little hard to explain, kind of like when you go to
the mechanic and say "ya see, it's making this noise..." and he looks atcha
like you have two heads!

When I'm running a course (dry or wet) and I push the car hard into a
corner. I feel and hear a prominent vibration coming out of the front end.
The most I've noticed it is during left handers, but that is just when I
noticed it, it might have also been happening during right handers.

The tires are usually right on the edge of slipping when I hear it (and
feel) it.

I wish I could explain the vibration better, but it's pretty deep. Wait, it
almost sound like when your pushing your chair out from a table on a vinyl
or wood floor. (close your eyes and hear that sound, but don't fall asleep,
there's more to this post)

Hey, wake up!

to add to that, it's definitely got a "pulse to it" coming out of the
steering wheel of the wheel/tire that's taking the weight of the turn. I
have an FM Sway Bar on the front but not on the back (CS class). I'm not
sure it can be attributed to this, but I wanted to mention it.

Let me know what you think this might be. OR if it is normal for running
that hard on stock A/S radial tires.

Thanks

Sounds like an underinflated tire.

Get a pyrometer and check pressures after a run. If the outside of the
tire is hotter than the inside (which is what I'll bet you'll find)
then add a small amount of air and try it again. Do this until you get
temps even across the tire.

I usually end up running different tire pressures on all 4 tires. If
the course has more left handers then I need more pressures on the
right side. If the course is tighter then the rears need more pressures.

Doing this usually results in a steady improvement in times and a big
improvement once the tire pressures are set properly for the course.

Matthew,

Is this during a fast corner or a slow corner. How much are you turning the
steering wheel? full turn, half turn?

I noticed that after lowering my 92 using FM + Koni when I have to turn in
hard on a rather slow corner (a 90 degrees bend) and almost have to turn the
steering wheel full I get a vibration from up front too. As far as I can
trace it back it is the wheel toching some plastic parts just behind the
front bumper (turnsignal). If I take the bend at a slower pace there is no
problem, but pushing it, makes the difference.

Yes I als have the FM sways, but I can't trace the noise back to them. After
regreaseing them again, still got this noise.

I forgot the easy way to at least have a clue if that is what is
happening.

Chalk the edge of your tires, make a few very hard turns (hopefully
recreate the noise) and see how much chalk is rubbed off of which tire.
This will tell you how far they are rolling over. Another thing is to
look at wear on the edge. When it is fresh it sometimes is easy to spot
one tire rolling over more than another.

What tire pressures were you running?

I don't know any sites, I got mine for free, but most I have seen run
about $100. If you can get one with memory. That lets you hit each tire
as you come off the track and then go back and compare temps. You want
to do this as quickly as you can so the tires don't have time to cool
off.

Last Time I ran I shoe polished my tires. My co-driver and I checked the
marks after each of our respective runs and the tire pressures.

As the tires heated up we tried to keep the pressures @38 and that seemed to
get us pretty good grip. We're both novices so we're just learning about
these things.

Our first couple of runs rubbed off shoe polish on the fronts, but not too
bad. We didn't re-mark them, but the rub-off didn't get any worse as we
maintained the tire pressure. However, the right tire did seem to rub off
more than the other. But there were 5 left handers and three right handers.

I think I mentioned they are A/S tires, they're in pretty good shape, and
they should be good to learn with until I can afford some AutoX tires (next
year, I think).

It's very possible I'm bending the tire. Next time should we be remarking
the tires after each run? That may be an obvious question, but I'm just
learning this stuff?

Thanks David

Definitely re-mark the tires if you scuff off the markings the first time,
otherwise you don't know if you've added enough air or even too much. The
scuff marking on the tire should come no farther than the edge of the tread
where it wraps over the side of the tire. If it goes farther than that you
are riding on the sidewall and will probably hear and feel all sorts of odd
things. If it doesn't come close to the edge of the treaded part of the
sidewall then you probably have too much air in and aren't getting as good a
grip as you can.

How about trying his link?

tinyurl.com/c1f1

In any case it seems like what I need to do Is keep marking the tires.
However, I never overrode the edge of the tread, but it is entirely possible
I had them to hard.

Thanks to everyone for their advice, I'm going to check everything everyone
suggested.
