The first time it was mentioned was with the '99/NB cars. I'm unclear as to
whether it was a requirement at the time or only a recommendation. My
understanding is that the '01 and later cars only list it as a *
recommendation*. The cars have a knock sensor and will roll back the timing
if there is any knock detected, the result is you *may* lose some
performance and possibly some efficiency but with the benefit of lower cost
fuel. There was a fairly lengthy debate here very recently on the relative
merits of using higher octane in the newer cars, if you do an archive search
for December you should find it pretty easily.
