This is kinda cool . . . plug in your zip code and this site does a search
of local gas pricing. I thought it was kinda cool.

We used www.albanygasprices.com because we live in albany. It's
pretty up to date (within hours, basically) and all the prices are timed so
you know how old it is. Our prices just started going up again in the past
day or two, so I have to watch the trend. It's been at least a month that I
could get 2.35 for 87 at a couple places but now they're at 2.39 :( Dammit,
I was just maybe, possibly considering accepting that price as livable.

That's not bad, here in New Zealand we are paying $1.50/litre.
There is 3.785 litres to a US gallon, so we pay $5.6775/US Gallon.
Make you feel better?

Oh, I know the Southies and the Euros have it bad. I suppose I
shouldn't complain on an international list :O It's not really the money
that bothers me, it's that they are made record profits AND that they were
taking advantage of the crises with the [US] hurricanes. THAT's what I
really gets me going :/ It's a shame it's not a more competitive market,
but all of the formulations is a pain for them, to some extent I admit
that... But it's also an easy excuse for price fluctuations and high
markets, etc, etc.
I feel a thread coming on!

We'd all ended up being greedy, grinning, drooling execs in
over-priced suits - apparently it's mandatory when you run these types of
things :O I wouldn't wish that on my Miata brethren (and sistren).

Sobering numbers.

Tax breakdown in New Zealand on fuel/litre: 38 per cent will go on the
roads, 32 to the government for general spending, 22 percent is GST for
general spending, and 8 per cent ACC.
ACC is the Accident Compensation Commission, it's a government body that
pays out for accidents, road, work place sports the lot, you cant sue people
here in NZ like you can in the US.
The bulk of the tax taken doesn't go on roads, only 38% of the tax take.

UPDATE III: Here's the full revenue taken off motorists last year:(2005)
Breakdown of Revenue from Motorists
Fuel excise (read TAX) $900m
Road User Charges $781m
Motor Vehicle Fees $228m = we have to have a safety inspection every 6
months on vehicle older than 2 years, newer vehicles only need one/year, and
they cost about $35 a shot.
GST (More Tax) on the above $239m, so you see they add the tax to the price
then tax the full amount again, so you get to pay tax on a tax. (great idea)

Traffic Tickets $112m In the Government Budget for 2005
Total $2,260m this is from a population of less than 4 million people!
So its $565 per year for every man woman and child in the country
Not bad!

Back when gas was under 2.00 here my wife and I happened to be
visiting my grandparents in Florida where they actually display the cost
breakdown of the price of the gas you're buying (in New York it's a
mystery), and somewhere between 40 and 60 cents on the less than 2 bucks was
taxes (of various kinds), so we're talking better than 30% taxing on gas -
which is why the US government will never try and lower the cost of gas,
they are getting cash from the average Joe almost as quickly as the oil
corps! I don't mind paying a justifiable price for things, but gas anywhere
is nuts in the sense that it's unecessarily expensive.

I'm not saying I agree with Ben Stein's opinion, but it is a different point

I don't think we need our own oil company. Many companies offer bulk/fleet pricing which is purchased at certain branded stations using a special card or other method of ID. I have long thought that this would be a really nice perq for MCA members and suggested it back then. Of course with no organized national club it would be a bit difficult to coordinate, although I suppose miata.net could set something like that up, if it was possible, on a membership basis. The trick, I think, is getting enough participants initially to reach critical mass.
