Jeff,
Thanks for the info. I was not aware that Ford owned
100 percent of Jaguar, Volvo (cars), Aston Martin, and
Land Rover. By the way, Range Rover is the car. Land
Rover is the company.
I was aware that Jaguar's quality has improved
significantly since Ford's involvement.
Unfortunately, Ford, as well as GM and the Chrysler
portion of Daimler-Chrysler, are still far behind the
Japanese, in my opinion. I've even seen some
compaints about the Mercedes-Benz side Of DC.
What's the source for your info concerning Ford's
ownership of the other brands? I'd like to get the
same sort of info on GM, Daimler-Chrsler, and a number
of European manufacturers. For example, what's the
Porsche, Audi, VW relationship?. What all does Fiat
own, other than Ferrari? Does Audi own all of
Lamborghini or just a controlling interest?
I tried the FoMoCo home site and couldn't find
anything in the annual report to stock holders. I
also emailed Forbes for a source of autombile
manufacturers ownership data, but haven't gotten a
reply. I would think that this sort of info would be
readily available to potential investors.
Thanks, again.

Wrong - plenty of Land Rovers being sold here.

It appears, based on the Land Rover site, that the vehicles in the US are the Land Rover Range Rover, Land Rover Discovery, and Land Rover Freelander. So, Land Rover is the company as Mazda is the company, or Land Rover is the car as Mazda is the car. Take your pick. :D
(In case you're wondering, I'm practicing being a pain in the rear)

Wrong. Land Rover is the company, Range Rover is a vehicle made by Land
Rover. Like the Freelander, Discovery or Defender - other Land Rover models.
Until the Rangie was introduced in 1971, Land Rovers were just, well, Land
Rovers. The model numbers were basically just the wheelbase measurements.

Well, my info might have something to do with the employer I DON'T speak
for.
But, the same information should also be available on Ford and other
companies at the auto industry news rags, such as Ward's Auto World. The
local Detroit papers commonly discuss such info, but you'd have to do some
microfiche research to dig out the details.
You can find more info on the Ford Website. At the top right, click on the
'Company' tab. Then click the 'About Ford Motor Company' pick. Next pick
'Brands'. You should arrive at
ford.com/en/company/about/brands/default.htm This takes you to a
page with the company Brands, click on the one of interest. This leads to a
real brief history of the brands. Further hot links take you to deeper
histories. The Mazda one for example lists when various percentages were
acquired. The Volvo one gives the date of acquisition, etc.
I'm not as familiar with other company websites, but they should provide the
same info, it is not a secret. You might also find info from the UAW.
As to the relative quality produced by the companies, the big three are not
as bad as their image seems to be. What is produced today is vastly better
than even a few years ago. It is far superior to what the Japanese
companies built their reputations on. BUT, the Japanese companies keep
improving and staying ahead. AND, its easy to ruin a reputation, real hard
to get it back. Again, my opinion.
Just one example. As a kid/young man growing up in the seventies I never
would have hopped in a five year old car, let alone a ten year old one,
without my tool kit for any trip over an hour. In the winter it was always
in the car. Now, I don't even think hesitate to take my 8 year old daily
driver which I only barely do the regular maintenance on and drive it down
to Florida and back without more than checking the tires and if I remember
it the oil. Amazing how reliable and durable cars are nowadays.
Now, some Miata content. The weather and roads finally cleared enough to
drive without constantly sliding sideways. I think I'm going to really like
this thing once I shed the winter coat and get to take the top down!!
