Larry,

Ahhh yes, Measure 23. Potentially devestating to the economy of a
state who already has budget issues trying to pay unemployment
beneifts in the state with the highest unemployment rates. Plus being
the second largest technology region in the country (next to
California's Silicone Valley) hardest hit by the economic downfall so
there is less taxable corporate income to help.

Remember though that this is a voter initiated refferendum (not
legislatively initiated). Any asshole who can raise 10000 signatures
can submit a refferendum for voting. The plan is based on the Oregon
Health Plan, a pre-existing socialized health care plan (whos budget
is also busted) for people living below the poverty level (~$22,000 a
year IIRC).

Doesn't do a lot of good for the unemployed because enrollment
happens only if your current employer doesn't offer health care
(there goes 11% of the voters). It only covers *you*, not your
dependants which means you either pay for health care for your kids
or put them to work to pay off their state funded high school sports
injuries that they wouldn't have sustained if the damned state had
opted for supporting the arts and sciences instead.

To make matters worse it is funded by supplimental income tax and
supplimental corporate taxation. In the state with the highest income
tax in the country (in the neighborhood of 22% depending on income)
it is unlikely to get voted if it means upping the income tax level
even more (there goes the other 85 percent of the voters). The
remaining 4% of voters who may actually support it are the idiots who
signed the petition to begin with or didn't bother understanding what
it is before they approved it.

People in this state are far too intelligent, broke or both to vote
for it. At least I hope so, otherwise I may have to move out of the
state. If anyone else is interested in seeing the fucking left wing
liberals at work take a gander at the full text...

healthcareforalloregon.org/initiative.htm

It's a damned fine concept but needs a whole lot more work before
it's worthy. Fortunately our states elected officials still have a
yay/nay vote on final acceptance of voted refferendums. Unless it's
blatantly stupid (like this) it will be approved, however we have had
instances in the past where approved refferendums have been vetoed by
the governor.

Brad

The other interesting thing I heard was that Oregon has the highest rate of
proposing and passing voter referendums in the country. I don't remember
the exact number but it was fairly staggering.

I hadn't heard that before but it's beleivable. There's consistently
between 30 to 60 refferendums on the ballot each election cycle. The
majority of them are positive, well written and beneficial to a vast
majority of citizens. I wouldn't be surprised if we were also on the
top 10 leist of highest percentage of voter turn out, though I
haven't heard that statistic either.

Well every year there is the required "lets start a
state sales tax" and "let use pump our own gas"
measures on the ballot...so that helps keep the number
high as well :)

The first one is just stupid. The second one is stupid to not have. Where
I lived in NY it was illegal to pump your own gas, HUH, what's up with
that. Go 10 miles to the next county and it was allowed.

Agreed and agreed. I think the pump your own gas passes because
voters don't feel like getting out of their cars in the rain and
would feel stupid for paying more money at the full serve pump...

I don't think I've seen a "full service" station here for over twenty years!
A few will still pump fuel but none check the oil or clean the 'screen like
they did when I was a kid. They're nearly all self-serve.

Don't they have canopies on the forecourt up there? ;)

Nah, it rains so much they'd probably collapse under the load. :)

Yeah, when I was in college in the late 70's, I worked part-time on the
weekends as a market research interviewer. I distinctly remember one
survey that gauged public attitude towards the possible introduction of
self-serve stations. One of the selling points was that self-serve would
save you a couple of cents per litre. Heh, that didn't last long once they
became prevalent.

Sure do have covers, but they might get their LLBean pants and Eddie
Bauer pants dirty and wet brushing against the side of their cars.

Funny thing is, that in NJ it's illegal to pump your own gas, and it's cheaper
than most other states. It really sucks to stay warm in the car, and pay less
money.

And they're not "Service Stations" anymore, but gas stations and/or
convenience stores that just happen to sell gas too. Even Wal-Mart sells
gas (Murphy Gas), Sam's Club (another Sam's Choice) and now our local
grocery chains have gas, Walgreens and Ekerds (drug stores which have
become variety stores with Rx service) are looking into it as well. Soon
it will be a true "one-stop" shopping trip to gas up, get your uppers and
downers, quick drinks, fast food and a week's supply of beer, bratwurst and
bread.

If I remember correctly wasn't this law passed to create jobs (gas pumpers?)
