The BRAKE light serves 2 functions:

1) To tell you that the ebrake is engaged.

2) To tell you when the brake fluid is low.

The brake fluid can be low for 2 reasons:

1) There is a leak and you need to replace the missing fluid and
bleed the system

2) The brakes are so work out that the caliper is full of fluid
instead of the reservoir.

DO NOT just fill the reservoir without checking the condition of the
brakes. If you just fill it up, you could wind up running your brakes
down to the nub and making your car unsafe and causing damage that will
cost more than just fixing the brakes.
