Bearing or brakes

So, I'm trying to decide what the noise coming from the right rear corner of my Miata is. It's sort of a "wha-wha-wha", or maybe a "rub-rub-rub", sound. I can only hear it with the top up. It increases with speed, and is only audible over 30mph. The car drives, stops, and turns just fine.
I have two theories:
1) It's the rotor. Swapping between race and street pads has created a rotor/pad that don't quite mesh; therefore, the noise.
2) I have a bearing going out.
Any thoughts?

Either problem will be resolved by taking the rotor off. When you do
that, check the bearings. If they are visibly worn, replace them. If
not, repack them and reinstall the rotor and see if the sound
continues.

Miata is a real big deal and not possible for a shad tree guy without
special equipment. Is that untrue?

Actually, replacing the front bearings is a piece of cake. See, the
bearings themselves "technically" aren't serviceable & you just replace the
entire hub/bearing assembly. You'll need a lot of torque to get the hub nut
off, but other than that it's the same level of work as a brake job. Now, I
said "technically" because the SM guys are disassembling them & repacking
with synthetic grease to increase life on track, but for street the factory
parts are just fine.
