I've got a question regarding the addition of driving lights & making the
fogs functional. I've got a '01 LS. I wanted to put a pair of Hella 550
driving lights in the grill. I've been advised that they will block too
much air intake. They're each 7 1/2" wide. I desire a good long distance
driving light that will fit in the grill, behind a Buck Diamond grill.
Has anybody replaced the OEM fog lights w/ any thing? I'm looking at Hella
Micro DE fog lights. Not sure if they're a direct replacement. I was
spoiled by the PIAA fogs I had on my SE-R. Not much fog/snow in Tucson, but
I'd like better cornering lights.

The fog lights are perfectly functional in fog and as it's illegal to use
them at any other time in most places I don't see a problem. If you want
cornering lights, Marchal and Cibie make them. In my opinion, putting
driving lights behind a grille, would negate any advantage that the lights
would offer in the first place. I would like to mount my old Cibie Super
Oscars but they're nearly bigger than the car! Besides, I don't drive in
rallies any more.

I'd be more worried about the functionality of the lights . . . the 99 I
just did today has the lights to either side of the smile -- AND the grill
embedded within. How on Earth will you be able to get a true angle to the
road way with lights sitting behind the grille? ARGH. Do you ahve a
website where these are sold? Does the 01 not offer Hellas that can be
installed on the faschia, as with models before?

They go for about 25', inward in a v-type shape, if memory serves (from this
morning --where's that Gingko again). You sight them in using the regular
headlamps as a kind of reference point . . . there is a specific angle at
which they meet on the ground. It seems from my new experience today that
you'd be too far away from the headlamps to really get that desired angle,
and thus would those lights not be hindered? Please send me a URL or the
instructions . . . this sounds more like a lookey-loo mod than a true set of
fog lights . . .but seeing is believing.

Okay . . . tell me more about your 01 . . they COME with foglights?!? I am
picking up a pal for a fun run tomorrow ( he just had surgery, and his wife
is busy, so he's gonna be a passenger in my car) who owns a 2001 BRG -- I
can look at it and try and put two and two together.
In final . . . isn't it CRAZY how for nearly ten years Miata stayed the same
. . .then the 99/00 . . . now the 01 is different??? Wow -- certainly keeps
us on our toes. I look forward to seeing how your lights work out, Geoff.

Anyone from California know if the fog light rule Jeff Gehrig mentioned is
applicable? I heard we can't have the blueish lights, unless they are OEM,
but never the fog light thing. I should warn my Miata club buddy if this
rule applies here . . .

Bonni, I think you'll find it's universal but too many people ignore it and
drive around annoying people, all the time thinking how cool they are. Here,
we have a name for them and it rhymes with bankers.
