Non Work Safe
This footage is not for everyone, if you're in doubt do not
download/view it.
This is some crazy footage from today's Bathurst 1000 V8 Supertaxi race.
During the race one of the cars hits (and probably kills) a kangaroo
that jumps onto the track.
members.ii.net/~jedabe/dan/Kangaroo.avi
We've had a few club members who've hit roos in the past.
I avoid particular roads around dawn/dusk when the roos are more active,
you get a clear idea how much damage even a small one like this can do.
Sorry if this post or footage has upset of offended anyone.
- Dave.

WOW...weren't they running under yellow at the time of the hit? I'd think
the 'roo was certainly killed, not 'probably'. Can't see him getting up
from that.

No, they were at full tilt and the impact speed was approximately 200 k.p.h.
(120 m.p.h.). The roo looked like an Eastern Grey, so probably weighed
somewhere around 200 pounds, (maybe more), death would have been instant.

Eastern Greys don't get that big - only male Reds. I think you're
probably right about it being an Eastern Grey, but it was just a littl'un
- maybe 50lbs. People here in the US complain about deer, but I haven't
found them to be nearly the threat that roos are. I grew up in Mt Isa and
used to make the overnight drive to Brisbane for university regularly -
there were many periods of those drives when I couldn't get past 60kph
because if there weren't kangaroos jumping across the road or alongside of
me I was driving slalom around all the carcasses left by the road trains.

Any animal being hit can be an issue in a low car such as the Miata. If the
roo happened to be caught at the apex of a high hop it might not be pretty.
With the Miata and deer, hitting them head on while they are crossing in
front of you or standing at a 90 degree angle to the car staring at your
headlights, the legs break away and the body comes sliding across the hood and into
the windshield.
I have not had this experience. Anyone here still around to tell their story?
Sounds like the body count littering the road makes the roo more dangerous
dead than alive.
Speed can kill at night. Keep it down to 80 MPH.

A Roo at the apex of a high hop would probably clear a Miata! A Wombat on the other hand would be like hitting a tree!

In that case, I might have been wrong about the species, it was a big roo, I
didn't want to replay the tape to get a better idea of proportions though,
once was enough.
I once hit a Wallaby, quite bad enough for me!

There was a yellow flag.
You can see the flag marshal waving it slow in amazement as he watches
the roo bounce off the v8 supertaxi.

How do you all get more than sound from that link? I am too dumb to get
pic with WMV 10, doing the upgrade because ver 9 would not haul it in either.

I'm having the same problem. The codec is wrong and I tried downloading the
current ones and it still doesn't work for me.

Can't help you with that, I had the whole race on videotape, the roo
happened in the fifth hour. I had to search a while to find it again and the
roo was not quite as big as it first appeared but certainly big enough to
cause quite a bit of damage to the car that was running comfortably in
fourth place at the time with a possibility of a Father and Son win, they
were able to repair it and ran for the remaining three and a half hours but
finished out of the places.

You obviously got this to work. When I try to download the program all that
happens is I hear a tone and then the page flashes and it goes back to the
same page. No download. :(

happens is I hear a tone and then the page flashes and it goes back to the
same page. No download. :(

You probably either have a firewall that's blocking the download or
something in your browser preventing what it believes to be a popup.
Are there any icons in your browser's status bar indicating a problem
or something in your tray related to a firewall with a possible
message?
