I use Auto Enginuity Scan Tool in my OBDII OTM with a serial connection
(they have USB) to an old MilSpec Itronix computer, but my brother is
currently using it to track down a problem with his '99 Miata EGR:
autoenginuity.com/
It will monitor all the standard EPA defined parameters and codes. They
also now have a Mazda Enhanced Interface. I don't have an OBDII Miata,
so I did not buy the enhancement.

Subject: [Miata] Anyone using CarChip to monitor there non-modified
Miata'scomputer?
Carchip.com has an interesting device but I would like something that
works in a more real time manner possibly hooked up to a laptop by USB.
Since I have an unmodified Miata I was wondering in anyone out there
monitors their unmodified Miata with something like the CarChip.

I have a couple of Davis Instrument's CarChips. I use them to pull codes
and reset check engine lights - and now that my oldest son is driving, to
monitor his driving habits. :-)
For the money, nothing is better for this. It logs if it is removed or
installed from the car and logs each trip - miles, time, hard breaking,
hard acceleration, etc. The enhanced model can log throttle position,
coolant temp, engine load, etc.
Periodically I pull the chip and check on him. There is now a version with
an alarm on it - it beeps when the car exceeds limits set in the PC.
In the recent Consumer Reports is a similar device with a built in
accelerometer. It can alarm and record on lateral g events. It MIGHT have
some real-time data collection possibilities.
