Back in the spring, I bought a new car without a trade-in. Then I sold a
car, and sent the paperwork in to the state to get a refund of the sales
tax difference. Naturally, I didn't keep a copy of the paperwork...and the
state now says they never received it. I can re-apply, but I have to have
the name and address of the buyer...which I don't have. I ran a Carfax and
got all the info I need...except the name and address of the buyer.

I have the VIN of the car I sold (obviously, since I was able to run the
carfax on it)...any ideas how I might get the name and address of the buyer
armed with that info?

You can pull this information from your DMV for a nominal fee.

As Dan said, most DMVs will sell any information for money :-)

If the new owner notified the car maker that they had your car, then
you might be about to pull it out of the service computer or get
someone at the car HQ to tell you this info.

I don't think here (TN) they will let you do this - but they should.
If you don't actually trade in the car then you don't get the tax
credit. While no tax sounds best, the MO way sounds like a good deal.

This site claims they will trace a VIN number to find the current owner,
etc. Doesn't sound like it is a free service though, and there is no
mention of price, which usually means it won't be cheap. Could be wrong
though.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I *think* I've solved the puzzle. The people at DOR
said they would verify a name, but couldn't give it to me. I didn't try
the DMV yet...maybe they'll do it for a fee...that's my next try if my
solution is wrong. I checked the website that Will mentioned...looks like
they want $50 for the info.

My solution: I went back through my telephone billing...I had called the
guy to tell him it had passed inspection...(and thanks to the phone
companies for making my old bills available on line)...I isolated a phone
number...did the 'reverse look-up' and couldn't find it (which led me to
believe it was a cell phone) so I called the number and got his
voicemail...he identified himself and DING...the bell went off in my head
as the right name. I've sent the name to DOR for verification, but I'm
sure it's right.

In Missouri, if you sell a car within 180 days of purchasing another one,
you can get the sales tax refunded for the amount of the sold car. My
carfax report that I pulled will give me the rest of the info I need
(mileage, etc.)...so it looks like I might get my refund afterall.
