Hey all,

I was silly enough to leave Junior outside top down last night. I came out this morning to find one heck of a soaked car :(

Any ideas on how I can dry the interior out? I don't have a garage, so I can't hook up a fan and have it blow into the cockpit...

Thanks!

-Bryan

Leave it for a day (or more) in the sun? My mom's Grand Caravan once had windows (front and those little rear vents) wide
open in a rain storm. I took the middle and rear seat sections out, opened all the doors and rear gate and let it air out an entire
nice warm day. Seemed to do it. While your Miata was definitely more open than the van, it's also more open for drying out!
What about the "dessicants" that came up a month or two ago? Maybe get a big one, or a couple of 'em... I think those might
take time, though. They can't suck all the moisture out in a day or two can they? Of course you could get smaller ones and keep them
in the car as you use it, drying them out (baking or whatever) every couple of days until the car seems to have cleared.

If there's any standing water on the floor you can remove the rubber plugs from the bottom of the car to reveal drain holes. There are two just forward of the seats, and I think perhaps two more in the back? (can't remember)

If there's any signifigant amount of water in the car you should consider removing the seats and lifting up the carpet to assist in the drying out process and prevent mold.

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago when transporting my car from Ohio to California. It arrived with considerable standing water on the floor ('twas actually sloshing around as I drove it off the trailer) and it took about four days to dry out after the aforementioned steps. This was sitting in my garage in January, so fairly cool temps and not much direct sunlight.

Maybe you can first try and get up most of the water using towells (by
pushing down onto the carpet). Then maybe use a hair dryer to get the rest
dry? I dunno. But that's probably how I'd try to get it dry. Good luck.
And don't do that again! ;)

Newspaper. Lots of whole newspapers (not individual sheets) layed out
in the carpets. They wick up an incredible amount of moisture. When
they look damp, throw them out and replace with new dry newspaper.

If you can get them under the carpet, even better, but on top works
pretty well too.

Simon.

It's happened to me several times as I live in SW Florida land of the sudden gully washer!

I see it has already been suggested to remove the plugs under the flootwells. You can access them from under the car.

You really need to get as much water out as you can. Depending on just how wet the car is. If very wet with standing water. Use your shop vac or a coin vac system. Or better if you have a car wash with a upholstery cleaner. And suck as much water up as is possible.

Parking in the sun is OK. I placed portable fans to circulate the air and left the car in the garage when further rain threatened. You must NOT close the car up until it's dry or your talking a serious mold problem. You'll NEVER get rid of that smell!

I think a desiccant would not help much for THAT MUCH moisture.

I've dried out my car after there were puddles in the seat! So I feel your pain.

So to recap.

Remove as much water as is possible by any means available. Vacuum, towels
Keep good air circulation - fans, bright sun
Keep in a dry location and open until dried out!

Good Luck.

That's probably only going to help with airborne moisture. It's one of those packages that you put in the closet to keep the clothes dry.

You really need air and heat or sun to do it quickly

Hi Guys,
In New Zealand we have car wash places that use the wands, you pay your
money select what you want to spray and away you go. They also have vacuum
cleaners, again you put the coins in the slot, then you can select a level
of vacuum you want, like "gentle" and "max", now I have been known to use
them to suck the water out of a car (my old Subaru), and they work fine.
Gets the carpet etc back to something less than a "carpet shampoo" wetness,
for the final dry, get yourself a leaf blower and off ya go.
Hope this helps

What about the "dessicants" that came up a month or two ago? Maybe
get a big one, or a couple of 'em... I think those might
take time, though. They can't suck all the moisture out in a day or two can
they? Of course you could get smaller ones and keep them
in the car as you use it, drying them out (baking or whatever) every couple
of days until the car seems to have cleared.

Eh, happens to me all the time. Just keep on leaving the top down,
it'll be dry in a day or so. The worst was the time I left the top
down, it rained, then instead of drying, it froze. The seats were ice
cubes.

Seriously, don't worry about it. Mop up what you can with towels.
Leave the windows cracked and top up until it stops raining, or the
evaporating moisture can't get anywhere.

Living in Colorado, it doesn't rain here often, except in August. I
don't usually put my top up in the summer, so every so often I get a wet
car. Always dries out fine, I don't do anything special. The only
permanent damage is the marking on the power window switch totally
rubbed off. Oh well, I think I can figure out which way is up.

That happened to me several yrs ago with an old 450 SL. Fortunately, leather
& carpets were so natty it didn't seem to make much difference. A Miata is a
completely different matter though, so as I see it, you only have one
option;

Call in sick and then spend the day driving topless until it dries out. If
you've been in Florida for any length of time, you know that when you see a
rain cloud, just take a two-block detour around it and you'll stay
completely dry.

Good luck,

I was able to borrow Chad's garage for a couple days, so the car is happily drying away right now with a fan in the cockpit and the top down. I'd be surprised if it's not totally dry by the end of the day.
