Mail From: miata (Jeff Gehrig)
John Ashcroft just announced from the White House a new Virus W32/Nimda@MM ,
possibly worse than the Code Red virus, not suspected at this time, of being
related to the events of last week but apparently devastating.
MCafee has this information
vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99209& , Norton at this time has
none.

Do your homework next time you go saying that Norton has no info . . . here
is the URL (which I sent out this morning to the list) for which you thought
Symantec had no info (Symantec makes Norton's):

Wow! How rude Bonnie. Can't a guy make a mistake? Maybe you should have
"done your homework" before spouting that CATTOY had an auto trans, eh?
I don't normally post messages like this, but that struck me as plain rude,
especially to a guy just trying to help out the list. Sheesh.

Completely different virus! That was discovered September 3, NIMDA
(W32/Nimda@MM was discovered September 18, which in your country, is today
(it's the 19th. here), and when I wrote the first message, there was nothing
on the Symantec site, ten minutes later, there was.

Alas, Bonni, a bit of homework on your part would have shown that the virus
reported by Jeff Gehrig this morning could *not* have been on anyone's radar
screen two weeks ago, considering that the information was just released.
In the meantime, Jeff, thank you for ringing the alarm -- It will save me
and my clients another bunch of virus headaches :)

Sonja, you're welcome, I just happened to be watching the Press Conference
on CNN when your Attorney General made the announcement. The fact that it
was announced thus, made me realise that it was quite serious. When I
queried Symantec, they replied that they had been notified and were working
on definitions to combat it. McAfee at that time, already had it posted, ten
minutes later, the information appeared on the Symantec site as well.

OK Phredd, you can rub it in! ;-{)
For anyone interested, I just checked my list of definitions, nimda was not
on it, downloaded the latest update and it's now on the list, so Symantec
wasted no time, even if McAfee did beat them to the punch.

Well said Sonja and least we forget Jeff is not even in the US and did not
get the warning from Attorney General in Australia and still he sounded the
alarm for us. Geez, this is ordinarily a friendly, helpful list. I only
hope that recent on edge remarks are a result of the attacks on the US having
us all with our defenses up. This is a community, folks. Can we get back to
acting civilly please? I have made my share of mistakes and caught many a
faux pas but such things are usually handled off list or in a joking manner
if on list. We're all here to coexist peacefully as we have a great bond in
a fun little roadster. Let's not lose sight of that with the recent
happenings in the world. Jeff has been a long time contributor and always
helpful. Thanks, Jeff, we appreciate your efforts.

I WAS being civil, I thought. Oh, well. Since Jeff has not shown signs of being offended (and he shouldn't == I always thought the stupid happy faces and all would indicate this . . .), so I am not too worried. If he were, I would be terribly sorry -- but I can't say I am sorry for someone's misunderstanding of an email. Sorry Cat -- I was being civil indeed. Not like some of the flack I got for your tranny -- lolol. Oh well. Can't win 'em all.

REALLY? That's interesting (NOT implying that you are incorrect, don't get
me wrong) -- the symantec site claims it was posted 9-04 . . . maybe they
were looking at the calendar cross eyed. I only know what I read there, so
I did my homework. =o) But who cares -- it's out and we are "safe" until
the next jerk programs a new virus. argh.

Bonni, you're looking at information for the wrong virus. W32/Nimda@MM was
posted 9-18. The virus you keep referring to, is W32.apost.worm .released
9-04. Am I offended? I don't get offended.

At dinner yesterday, I tried to cut myself a slice of prime rib,
but it was only divisible by itself and one.
Got red?

At dinner yesterday, I tried to cut myself a slice of prime rib,
but it was only divisible by itself and one.
Got red?

It's the Nimda virus everyone's been talking about (notice nimda = admin
backwards).
I haven't been able to chime in on this thread, as people here have been
scrambling to try to head off the damage this thing can cause in our
organization of thousands of servers and I have no idea how many
workstations. This thing hit last night German time and it's growing by
insane proportions due to its multiple infection routes.
Basically, if you use IE or Outlook, be aware. If you have antivirus,
both Norton's and McAfee's latest will protect at this time. If you
don't, set your security settings to "high" on IE or at least disable
all scripting so you don't get hit by the web page auto-infect feature.
Be on the lookout for anything with "README" in the name in Outlook,
and don't open any messages or attachements you don't absolutely trust.
With Netscape and other mail readers, just don't download and run
everything, and disable JavaScripting.
If you run an IIS machine, get the latest patch rollup from Microsoft
NOW! If you're running Exchange, please put some filename blockage in
to protect your clients.
My wife at home using dialup for just long enough to check mail already
got probed by this thing over 80 times (using ZoneAlarm to block).
Frank.
