timing adjustment on 1996 1.8

Hello all, just curious on one step in the timing adjustment of my 1996 1.8 L. In the Haynes Manual it says that you only need to ground the "ten" pin in the diagnostic box for 95's and earlier....however I have seen online some folks state that it needs to be done on all cars. Just looking for clarification. Thank you, Brian
