I have the 10th anniversary 1999 Miata. we love the car, and have had no problems with it. Until now. I have only 83,000 miles on the car, but am hearing a screeching or squealing noise when I release the clutch. But car runs and shifts fine. Dealer says I need a new transmission. Anyone else have this experience? dealer suggests replacing with used transmission w/ 53K miles on it--not that much less than mine. suggestions?

I have experienced this exact same issue. Turned out to be a throw out bearing. Remove the transmission, replaced the t.o. Brg. And the clutch disc. No more noise.
