Recently my poor Cynthia was hit in a parking lot with no notice. The insurance took care of everything, but there was one minor detatil they couldn't fix. When the front drive-side quarter panel is replaced the Miata Special Editiion Badge is supposed to be replaced with it. However it was not. I have scoured around the internet and have come up blank. Being station in the UK doesnt help much either. I did come close with planetmiata.com (a specialty auto recyler specializing in Miatas), but when the badge is removed from the panel bits of the chrome foil on the back is taken off and the piece is not as it should be. It seems as if Mazda doesn't have spares Any help with this would be awesome.

It may be a dumb question, but does anyone know if the large crankshaft bolt (the one securing the timing belt sprocket) may be a left hand bolt. My granddaughters 92 Miata is throwing a computer code for the crankshaft key and I've had a breaker bar and pipe on it with no success. I hesitate to pull any harder and thought perhaps it may be a left hand thread and I'm tightening it. I've never seen a left hand thread on any other car, but I'm not familiar with the Miata.

Just got back from Reno where we went to the big MG car event. On the way there on Wednesday afternoon, we were caught in the worst traffic jam I have ever experienced. We (wife and me) were unfortunate victims of the horrible traffic jam caused by road construction on Hwy 80 going into Reno. There was a stop-and-go situation for about 30 miles. I thought I was so smart- I had driven my 2001 Miata SE, thinking the trip there would be comfortable and stress-free.. Wrong.

The traffic jam was horrible and the ambient temperature was warm. After about ten miles of crawling, stop and go, the clutch hydraulics quit working. Clutch was engaged, would not release.. I limped for several miles not being able to disengage the clutch, would start it in gear and just go slow. A K-rail separated the divided highway and there were no places to pull off safely, so seemed like it would be impossible to get help. There were numerous times I had to stop completely in the roadway, so would just shut the engine off, and restart in 1st or 2nd and crawl some more. I was able to pull off the road about 20 miles short of Reno at the little village of Floriston where there was an exit, and an exit on the westbound side of Hwy 80 as well. So at least it was safe and accessible to a tow truck there. We ended up waiting two hours for AAA towing. In the time we waited, the car and the outside temperature both cooled off, and the clutch regained its function. But the traffic was still jammed out on the freeway, so I couldn't just drive it into Reno as the conditions would surely have caused the clutch to fail again. Strangely, the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder was/is fine.

Anyway, thank God for cell phones and AAA. Got a nice flatbed truck transport into Reno, right to the hotel. I took a chance and didn't do any repairs or take it to a shop. Drove up 8 stories of the hotel parking garage, and the clutch was fine. Next day, drove it to the MG show outside of Reno and it worked fine. The big test was the 200 mile drive home. Since I didn't get caught in traffic where I would have to use the clutch, it worked fine, and I made it home.

I will rebuild or replace the clutch hydraulics of course. I can't help thinking the MG gods (or demons) had something to do with this happening to me, since this clutch system is a copy of that used on MGs.

Here are a few photos of the Miata broken down with smiling wife, the traffic jam on Hwy 80, and the great MG car show. I got a couple pics of Andy Preston and his fabulous MGA coupe (one of only 4 at the show). Another car that I found to be outstanding was a black '62 MGA Mk 2 De Luxe. There were more MGTFs than I have ever seen in my life, and all of them were gorgeous. The cars that came from all over the US and Canada astounded me for the owners' dedication and devotion to the marque. And some of the preserved cars and original owner cars were really amazing to see.

I didn't take enough photos, and my choice of subjects was limited. I'm sure there will be much better pics of the show than this, as my camera seemed to want to capture mainly early MGBs that were done to a high standard, as that seems to be my current obsession.

Since some of you expressed an interest in following my leap into production racing ... I figured I could start a thread and provide a couple of updates over the coming weeks and months.

As recap. I bought the roller from David Bryson over the summer and in the past months have updated some of the safety elements - installed a Kirkey road racing seat, new quick release and Sparco steering wheel, Shroth 2" 6 point harness and AIM Pista digital dash. We had to do some sheet metal and roll bar fabrication to get the seat mounted properly and good belt positioning. I also installed rear view mirrors (very important)

I've also been re-wiring the car for a lot of reasons. The car was well designed and built, but the wiring not as much. So I've eliminated circuits, and where I can re-soldiered and routed, mounted etc. I now have a very good understanding of how to wire an Electromotive and AIM system.

I've also been working with Jesse Prather on the development of my driveline and suspension.

The suspension has been removed and the AFCO shocks rebuilt. I'll also be replacing the custom front a-arms with stock, because I don't want to replicate issues I witnessed at Nelson over the summer with certain failures.

Before we started I had to source a core motor, build an engine stand and crate for shipping back and forth.

Two weeks ago I installed a OS Giken 4.8 LS differential and today, Jesse sent me some photos of his progress on the motor. It will be shipped to me in the next week.

Lastly, he already finished my transmission - a stock case with quaife SC/CR gears which will be delivered with everything else.

The vinyl wrap goes on this Wednesday.

Obviously a pretty serious effort and I want to thank my generous sponsor Third Wave Digital who has partnered with me (MAC Racing LLC) in the development of what will be a real rocketship in FP.

Enough talking. Here are some pictures. First two are what I sent to Jesse.
That Jessie Prather is a wizard, makes a Production Miata motor look like a blown Hemi and still passes tech. Amazing. ;)
Fred you should have a great car this spring with all the work you've put into it. Here's hoping for a lot of podiums for you.
The Prathers do great work. How much modification is allowed in FP as opposed to SM?
BTW, I think that first engine might be under-carbed>:D<
That first motor came out of the Bigfoot Monster truck.

The best way to describe the difference is that the SM is a car that races. The LP FP Miata is a purpose built race car. That may spark a debate, but the rules packages are completely different and FP provides a world of opportunity to make modifications in the persuit of more speed.
John, basicly , Limited Prep engine like Fred's 1600 Miata motor are governed at CR (11.0 to 1) max valve lift (not sure what it is on the Miata, on alot of LP engines it is .450") you cannot port the head beyond 1" of gasket matching, stock valve sizes, stock rod and crank required, but you can lighten and polsih them, no dry sump allowed unless the rules say OK for you car. He has to run stock injectors, can not port the pleum, or thin the throttle body, but he can run any aftermarket engine control managment system. in EP, the 1600 Miata can be built to full prep rules, meaning any CR, ported head, any cam lift, dry sump and such, so you can see the LP FP Miata being a more popular package, because it is very competitive in FP at LP ruels, and more reliable and lot less expensive engines to build and prep, than the full prep EP car.
It's .390" lift and 10:1 compression.

Hap's right, it's a low stress motor that provides seasons of reliability and will make power to 8k rpm. The rings on the pistons go bad before the rod bearings.

I'm not sure if Charlie Campbell is racing his brother's Miata again, but he's a fantastic driver and is the FP benchmark in the NE. Serge Lentz is also very fast and his car has all Prather's parts on it. Anyway, NE small bore production group is really tight-nit, and you'll feel more than welcomed.
This is a learning year. Gotta sort out the car, learn how to work on it, drive it, find my set up and get some seat time.

In 2012, I'm very excited about running the full MARRS series and maybe the ARRC in November.

I can't wait to get out and test in March and start to see what lap times I can expect. I anticipate picking up a few seconds right off the bat. This car will be light years ahead of the yellow one I had.
But, here are more pictures none of which reveal anything competitive, but are enjoyable to look at.
I like that header. That's the second tri-y Miata header I've seen.

Jesse and others used a modified "Boig" header for years. Recently, Stahl came out with a 3 different headers, one was a stepped header, then 949racing had Hytech build a few 4-2-1 headers. I wonder if he worked with Burns on that one as Stahl sticks with 4-1 designs.

Like Hap has talked about before, everything else (other than pistons, rings, crankscraper, ecu and camshafts. I forget if valve angles are specified to be stock ), it all comes down to finding good core parts. Thanks to the Spec Miata guys, that aspect has been studied very well.
I bought one of Jesse's Boig headers used from Bryson, but later sold it to Serge Lentz when I learned of the new higher HP design.

This was a no limits build, so if it was the best option, it's been used. As Mike Collins told me, "you've got no excuses now." :)

Bob, you mentioned Charlie Campbell. I met him at Nelson this year and he was very generous letting me crawl all over his car taking picturesis it is a nicely built car, but watching him drive I wondered if a good bit of his success also comes from sheer driving effort. It seems like he's on the limit non stop. Fun to watch and talented. He ran two classes all season - SM & FP.
Charlie's car is the sister car to Chris Howard's (zchris on the prod forum) (http://prodracing.com/prodcar/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=12746). He's a chassis and roll cage builder outside of Boston. Incredible work and a nice guy (if anyone in the NE needs a cage or a GT chassis built, look him up). The Campbell's chassis is top notch, I just don't know how developed their driveline is compared to Prill's. He also doesn't have an aero nose on it either. He's definitely driving the car more than most anyone and it's definitely fun to watch.

Keep in mind Charlie runs at the front of Spec Miata up here in the NE and has done so since we got in it, so he has a lot of hard fought track time in addition to his natural talent.

That's Serge in the begining who gets a love tap, and you can see him catch up to Charlie at the end. Keep in mind Bob's GTL car is some 500lbs or so lighter than the Miata. Charlie was killing everybody through T2 and T3.
Wrap is going on this morning. Apparently with the way the design, print and installation cause it to lay, the MAZDA will not be directly over the flares as I would have liked, but they both look the same on both sides, so I'll have to live with it ... little things like that bug the crap out of my although. Sort of like getting your first scratch on a new paint job. It will sit with you for a while.
Ok, so my contributions to this thread are winding down. I'll let you know how it does in February on the dyno, but otherwise the car is pretty much done.

My wife and kids were out of town - left Friday - so I've put in more than 30 hours over two days getting the car ready. My back is killing me :).

I finished the wiring (almost, I still have some sensors I need to finish), rebuilt the front and rear suspension and then installed the motor, transmission and powerplant frame. It is about 95% complete. I'll tidy up the sensors, fabricate an exhaust, upload a tuning file and upload a tuning file.

Funny Bill. There are several things I really like about the car. Particularly the increased room for my hands to work. At 6'3" my hand is large enough to palm a basketball, so you can imagine the struggles of working under an MG.

This car has a lot of space under the hood and under the car. It has a clever single frame rail that connects the transmission to the rear diff. The engine mounts to the cross member, so you could literally pull the body off the running gear. I put the engine and transmission in the car by myself with the radiator still in the car in about an hour. Not bad for my first time and with that were no frustrating crossmembers or bulkheads.

I also like that the intake is on the opposite side of the exhaust. You all know how difficult it is to tighten down the exhaust manifold with a pair of SUs attached. :(

A great weekend all and all and you can determine that by my well skinned and bruised fingers and knuckles. (tu)
Looking good Fred. I spent the weekend working on a Miata. Doing bodywork from a hit and run and a new timing belt and water pump. These cars are so great to work on; 10, 12, 14mm sockets will dissemble 3/4 of the car.
He had a couple of taps, but I imagine he was frustrated. I haven't driven the track, but I expected less middle pedal in the tighter areas from the first Miata.

I just purchased a 1999 MX5 with about 70k miles. After bringing it home I noticed a small oil spot under the car. Opening the hood I saw that there is oil on the plastic covering tne engine from below. The oil seems to be coming somewhere from the engine and runs out at the lowest point i.e. near the left front wheel. Does anyone have any ideas, or has experienced simular.

I just took delivery of a 2007 Miata and noticed that the oil pressure guage was showing different pressures depending on engine RPM. I've owned many different makes but never a Miata. When this happened with other cars it was the sending unit. I'm new to this forum and was hoping to get some input for this newbie.
Thanks.
